BUT it would be very nice if they did. If you can, get your TA to write the letter, or whoever taught you personally, and then have the prof sign it or co-sign it. The rule of thumb really is that you need to get 2 recs from professors or teachers in biological sciences and one from the humanities. The rest of them can come from research, work and whatever other field your school wants it from. Unless you took some course or did some post-high school work with this prof, I don't think it is what they want then. Here was my breakdown:
1 prof in the bio dept.
1 prof in immunology (took a class)
1 prof from research
1 prof from humanities
1 nurse which I did some clinical work with.
I would say that 3 is the bare minimum.
