One more time...

I feel like I am running out of options. I graduated overseas and did my residency training in my country of origin. Now, taking my USMLE exams for ECFMG certification in preparation for residency application, I am having dismal problems with LOR's.

I contacted my residency preceptors, and they are issuing their letters, but most programs in the US require LOR's from American doctors who would have observed me in a clinical setting, and I haven't been successful at that. I need suggestions from people who were in the same situation I am now, and who were able to work out some observerships or externships.

If you were not able to obtain those letters but succeeded in obtaining an interview and ranking, were those programs understanding regarding the difficulty for an IMG to obtain those letters?

Any input you might have would be greatly appreciated!

I think you have to do some research work with American clinicians. PDs really like the LORs written by people they know and they do not trust the LORs from overseas. I mean, how do they know whether DR.A is indeed existing, let alone the best surgeon in your country?

You really have to work hard in the American reserach lab for a couple of years and IMPRESS your research boss. Of course, you must LIKE research. It is boring and you have to be productive. I have seen people waste two miserable years in the lab and still have to return back to their country.

If your Russian, I know a doctor in Michigan (Detroit area) who may give you a chance to work... then later provide LOR...

What kind of Doctor we're you before arriving US?

Drop me a line if your interested.
