Yes, as a physician. None of us signed off on our rights to healthcare privacy when we became physicians.

It's about public safety

In what way? The OP's anxiety is not a public safety issue, as evidenced by the fact that the states that don't ask such intrusive questions aren't in a public health crisis caused by impaired physicians.

Let's call it what it is -- states ask because no one has told them they can't. That needs to change.
