Why does RadOnc put such a strong focus on research experience?

Because the field bases its treatments on research. It is an evidence-based specialty to the extreme.

There are multiple reasons, one of which the previous post alludes to. Additionally, at least half of the programs have a very strong research emphasis, so much so that you receive 6 months in your PGY-4 year that is exclusively dedicated to research. Therefore, they want to know that:

1. You will be productive in those six months (some programs give even up to one year)

2. You will actually enjoy, and seek out, research projects. Program directors and attendings do not want residents whom they have to continually prod to contribute to the research mission of the program.

3. Even if you don't LOVE research, you are at least committed enough to the field that you will go through the process of getting a few papers published before being accepted as one of their residents.

4. You are dedicated enough to the field that you will do your part, through research, to keep the field at the cutting edge of technology and evidenced based medicine.

Ultimately, it is such a competitive field that they (program directors) want people who are highly intelligent, motivated, hard-working individuals that will thrive over the course of their four years at their program.

I wish all of you medical students the best of luck. IMHO, it's the best field in medicine because it combines the opportunity to work with the best patients (most grateful and compliant), use fascinating treatment modalities, have a great quality of life, be intellectually stimulated, work with incredibly friendly colleagues and be well compensated for your efforts. I feel incredibly blessed to be joinging such a wonderful field and July cannot come fast enough, LOL!
Take care,
Cyber

Aren't these salaries now outdated? For example, Hospitalists make much more than that...$210K+. Can you make an updated list? :D
