Does anyone here use the words like, i mean, kinda, sorta, you know what i mean, you know what i'm saying.... the whole slew of them.... a lot during your normal conversations. Does this worry you about interviewing? It sounds so immature... I don't do it too often, and if i know exactly what i am saying i won't use random words at all... but when i am thinking of an answer (like random questions at an interview) i just can't help but to insert these damn stupid little words. Anyone else with this problem... and if you had an interview already, did you even think about this at all?

It's a hard habit to break, I know, but start now! Wear a rubberband on your wrist, and if you catch yourself saying "like", inflict pain! Fling the rubberband!

But seriously, practice interviewing....interview yourself in the mirror, or do a mock interview with a school advisor or a friend...practice makes perfect! :)

i've been saying "like" for at least 20 years now. i remember my friend's mom making fun of us for saying it when we were really little! i also say "i'm all".

I noticed myself doing that a few years ago and it bugged the crap out of me. So now when I notice that I say 'like' I just slow down and try to think before I talk (though it's REALLY hard to do that sometimes :) ) I, too, am worried about this inhibiting my interviewer's perception of me.

There was a news station who conducted a special on this (tells a lot about the quality of the local news down in south FL). It was primarily about teenagers using the phrases like, as if, you know, etc..... They actually had conversations with various teens and counted the amount of times they said those phrases. Needless to say, it was amusing (and scary at the same time). And so I've stopped myself from picking up the habit, but whenever they slip out - I feel like jumping off a 23 story building
A Terrrrrrible habit

Not only do I find myself using filler words I also find myself speed talking and in the process mixing up my words. I have tyo make a conscious effort to speak clearly and slowly. But like Foxy said practice makes perfect

It depends on who I am talking to. I talk differently to persons of authority than I do to peers. Most people do this, without even realizing it. You know how you can go from hanging out with your friends to having dinner with your grandparents and even though you swear all the time with your friends, you never drop an f-bomb in front of Granny? Same thing with like, you know.

How bad would it be if I said stuff like gonna gotta sorta kinda... instead of going to, have to, kind of etc in an interview? I've been trying to break myself of the habit for a while now, but it still slips out sometimes.

I don't know... I think I had this sort of interviewing persona... I mean, I was still myself... but more formal.

i sometimes put a nice gutteral between words. as in: "so for this experiment we used ahhh water as the uhhh solvent for benzene."

i try not to speak in that way, but sometimes it comes out when i am focusing on what i am trying to say rather than how i am saying it. i also have a slight tendency to stutter when thinking two steps ahead of where i am speaking. ;)
