Why does Baylor ask for SAT scores? I dont think i did that impressively on the SAT but my undergrad record is good. Is it a red flag for them if you dont list it? Its kinda unfair to ask for a high school score and not allow us to write in our high school activities; you come and go at every level as a package, not a number...

yea its total bull****

I thought i would never have to deal with my extremly low SAT score ever again, but now why do they ask it on med school aps?

Is that even a deciding facotor? How well you did on the SAT?

I certianly hope not... cause thats goona kill my app.....

I hear that they just look at verbal or something to see if it makes sense with your MCAT verbal score....i dont know what to belive anymore so, yea

I was speaking to my pre-med advisor (who's also an AdCom at a medical school which requires your SAT score(s)), and he stated that SATs are generally not looked at unless the MCAT score is significantly below the school's MCAT average. It's a way for them to judge that you're not a complete bafoon at taking standardized tests. You will be taking numerous standardized tests in your medical career (USMLEs, boards), so they want to make sure you can succeed at them. It's kind of strange, but if it works, it works.

I thought that this was kind of dumb too. My MCAT and SAT scores are pretty comparable--not bad, but not 1450/35 range either. So I guess that this will only reinforce that I am an only an "average" test taker. Grrrrr....

soooo,

am I the only one who had a BAD class rank in HS? That was annoying to me. I didn't care about my grades back then, so now I'm being punished as I apply to med school. Shoot, I thought it was hard enough getting into college with that rank! haha...thanks Baylor for dredging up the past we all wanted to forget

yeah... i was in the lower half. the only reason i got into UT was cause of my SAT score - it sure wasnt becasue of my grades.

however, i put n/a for all rank stuff, because even though we kind of knew where our rank was (some people needed to know for competitve programs), our ~100 person graduating class was officially "unranked"

What sucks is that I was in a class full of geniuses (we ranked 99.9% on standardized tests), so I was 9/21 with a 3.8/29 on the ACT. What if you never took the SAT? Do they ask for your ACT?

They do ask for ACT if you didn't do SAT.. At least on the Texas application.

I went to a selective undergraduate college that did not require the SAT or ACT (there are several of these around...look at USNews rankings). Anyway, I took it and sent it to all the undergrad schools I applied to because it was an alright score, but for med school it is really not impressive. So I called the medical schools I applied to asking them if the SAT or ACT blank was a required entry... they said it was optional...I left it blank.

So basically, you lied. Nice!

Read my post again...Did I say that I didn't take the exam...No...I just didn't put it on the application. I specifically asked these schools whether or not it was required. They said no!

If it's an optional question, you can leave it blank. However, from the way you told that story, it sounded like you lied.

Sorry...the way I wrote it may have sounded confusing...I didn't lie or at least didn't intend to lie...I just called all the schools back just to make sure they said it was optional, "not required", and they said yes. I am kind of relieved because I really don't want the schools to think I lied...since both of you said that it sounded like I had lied, I got worried.

Penn State also asks for SAT/ACT scores, but it is optional. I got a 1260 on the SAT, which I thought was decent at the time. However, this was back in 1992 and I remember hearing that the SATs were changing shortly after I took it. I don't know if this turned out to be true, but at the time, guidance counselors were telling us that on the "new" SAT, our score would probably go up 100 points. Anyway, I doubt that an ADCOM is going to realize that I took a different version of the SAT than the one that the "traditional" applicants took.

Anyway, just that fact that they ask for SAT means that it is a consideration for the ADCOM. If it wasn't, then why ask for it at all? I wonder at what point it is better to leave that question blank. Obviously if you got 800, leave it blank. What about 1000? What about 1200? Who knows.

Yeah I got a 1270...I left it blank...did you leave it blank? I wasn't sure whether or not I should have, but I did. Every school I talked to said that it was optional and that if I left it blank it would not negatively affect my application. So I believed them...I understand your point though.

I have this same issue with the Penn State app, and I put mine down, but I wonder if your SAT score is awesome (mine was) and your MCAT is not-so-awesome (mine is), what they think of that....

Hopefully it's a good thing??

Hey morganlefay, have you heard anything from UT...secondary, interview, or anything at all! Just want to know. I think that they maybe slow...hopefully that is just it.

I haven't submitted yet, but I think I will reveal my score. I don't want to look like I have something to hide. Plus, they're not going to assume that your score was really high anyway.

hmmm I haven't heard a thing from UT, granted I'm out of state, applying because I have family there. So I assume they're waiting to see my august mcat score before telling me anything, or sending a secondary. Good luck and let me know if you hear anything!
