Twice this week. I'm standing with some friends, all wearing scrub pants. Little kids ask if we're nurses, and giggle. This was in the ghetto. I figure, 10 year olds, probably misinformed. Fast forward 2 days later. Higher socioeconomic neighborhood. EXACT same scenario, same 2 guys with me. School bus with kids, "are you a nurse?" and giggle as the bus drives away.

Is there some wide-spread joke between little kids to do this to any guys they see wearing scrubs? I can't rationalize it. I know they're just kids, but what's the deal.

Usually it's us women med students getting called nurse, by kids and adults alike. It's funny that the shoe is on the other foot!

lol, that would make sense if I had those red scrubs with little flowers. But I was wearing the manly blue scrubs with a military jacket, and my friend had the green surgiscrubs. There was more testosterone per square inch between us than a freshly juiced weight lifter.

It's a conspiracy, and I'll get to the bottom of it ! The next kid will receive Jack Bauer style interrogation.

It's not possible to look tough in scrubs even with a leather jacket. Maybe if you had tats all over your arm and neck and carried a chainsaw you might look tough.

Most people associate white with doctor in my opinion. blue with nurse. Its a understandable mistake.

LOL, I was wearing green when they yelled out, "ARE U A NURSE ?" Beastmaster commented to me about this being a joke amongst young kids these days when it happened today.

The pink scrubs may have confused them.

No no no! None of this "I know they're just kids" nonsense!

We have got to treat those little rascals with the respect they deserve. Now, if an adult comes up to you and says those things, you respond with an uppercut.

So my advice would be to go to the bus-stop tomorrow and pound on those kids while gently explaining them to that nurses and doctors are both medical professionals to be respected.

And if you have some spare time, a wedgie or two never hurt anyone.

    "Nice nurse's outfit, guy."

    "These are O.R. scrubs. I'm a doctor."

    "OH, ARE they?"

Perhaps, they've watched to much Meet the Parents/Fockers? Male nurses seem to be pop culture nowadays.

lol this thread is cracking me up for some reason. it's a nice intermission from neuro (which is rapidly building up).

just look on the bright side, the little kid didn't say "hey mister, do you work at a day care center??" (and then stick out his tongue)

You should be more worried about them thinking you were a woman!!! If they thought you were a male nurse they would have said "are you a MURSE?"

So you apparently have bigger problems!!!!!!!!

Just tell them you're a surgeon and brandish a scalpel at them while threatening to remove their appendices.

Turn them into wife-beater scrubs like Dr. Rey has and then nobody will question that you are the real deal! :)

    Right behind you
To avoid future episodes like this, just wear your white coat everywhere, complete with the stethoscope around your neck at all times.

Now no one will dare call you a nurse. Everyone knows nurses don't wear white coats, they wear scrub jackets with teddy bears on them.

Or instead of a flower print you could try a repeating print of "MD"

LOL, nobody was upset when it happened. Me and beast master were just surprised as to how both groups of kids made the assumption. It had to be more than just mere coincidence. Like i care what a 5 yr old thinks.

Yet more proof that nurses never should have been allowed to switch to scrubs from the white dresses.

This is why I prefer boxer briefs only with my scrub top. They're too shocked to comment about what my role is.

In memory of That 70's Show, BURN!!!! You got burned by a bunch of little kids who probably know you are a doctor! What you should have done was whip out an opthalmoscope, told them you were a doctor and needed to look at their retina, and blinded them in one eye for about ten minutes!

Well those kids are right. Doctors don't wear scrubs out in public. The folks who do that sort of thing typically are nurses, janitors, PT's, scrub techs, etc.
