So ... I'll be most likely starting my first year at UMDNJ this Fall. I was wondering if anyone can tell me of areas near the school where I can get a decent apartment. Preferably some area outside Newark but not too far? What's the monthly rent that I should expect?

Thanks in advance!

i am curious as well. also, does UMDNJ require collecting teeth?

Ohh! I'll be at UMDNJ too! 😀 Collecting teeth? Maybe we could find some roomies here cuz their website hasn't been updated in a bit.

you could try edison, bloomfield, etc for housing

But does anyone live in Newark itself? It seems more convenient, or is it that bad?

Anyone looking for a roomate? How do you go about looking for one???

hey guys, i will be attending umdnj in the fall as well 🙂 i am also very interested in living in the dorms, and i was wondering if anyone else was interested as well, possibly future roomies? feel free to PM me.
anyway, cant wait to meet everyone!

I didnt even know they had a website for housing/roommates...

Also, does anyone know if the dorms would be single/double/apt-suite like? I wonder when they would send that info out.

im a senior at umdnj. I live in bloomfield and pay 775 for 1 bedroom. Its very close and not in newark (good) I couldnt imagine living in those dorms, too close to school and its in newark. Some ok parts of newark are in the iron bound section but still be prepared to have your windows smashed occasionally. If your rich, live in hoboken. Other good places = belleville, montclair

I'm going to be a MS1 this fall and I'm looking for a female roommate to share an apartment with. I'm looking into the new newark Eleven80 apartments which seem quite reasonably priced so PM me if interested!

how far are those apt from the school and do u know how much it is?

I've lived in the lovely city of newark for the past three years. ITs a great town. Yeah there are shots fired often, and infact there was a student shot and killed rite outside of my dorm at njit. Look at the brightside, the area of University Heights (where UMDNJ,NJIT, Rutgers, and Essex County COllege are) is pretty safe. There is alot of campus security and the newark police too. I recommend living close to the school, cause that is your best bet. Society Hill is pretty nice. Its kind of expensive but you pay for location. Considering that I can see the Big Red Bold UMDNJ letters from my room, and I saw the new building spring up, id say the dorms/apartments are by far the safest bet. Also from what I've heard, the building is actually attached by a walkway to the med school, which is right next to the dental school. Ive also got to mention that Newark probably has the best transportation available to a student. You have train, bus, subway, airport, and more than 6 highways within 3 miles( ive never taken the ferry but i think its close too). Also NYC is mad close. If u want an awesome view and rent through the nose choose hoboken.

hey guys,

anyone have any updates on the dormitory construction going on right now?

🙁

ugh..

I need a roomie too! Private message if interested!

hey all, i actually have lived in newark, and work in teh surrounding area. its not that bad. but true it is unsafe at times. your best bet to avoid bad neighborhoods is south orange. seton hall university has its campus right along the border of newark, most of the upperclassmen live within minutes of the school iso you see a lot of cops driving around come night. they have apartments buildings wihtin one to two minutes of hte border of newark that are filled wiht students so its safe there. south orange borders milburn which is one of the most affluent neighborhoods in new jersey. 100% this would be the best place to live if your major concern is safety.

Hey Everybody.

I will be part of the Dental Class of 2010.

I definitly agree that South Orange is a good choice. There is a train that leaves often (every 20mins rush hour - every 1 or less other times) from South Orange and goes into Newark. I live riht near there. It takes me about 15-20mis by car to get to UMDNJ.

Did everybody notice the information packet we received in today's mail?

Among all the sheets was a "NJ Dental School - Housing Information" sheet 👍 . It basically asks for a release to give your names to other students who are also looking for housing. I guess the school is going to try and hook everyone up who needs a roomate.

I am so excited. I just want to school to begin already. Does anyone know the start date? The cover letter just says in August.

Well, It will be nice to chat with everone untill we all meet.

I wonder why they didnt say anything about the new dorms...

btw, did anyone get their financial aid packet yet?

here's the lowdown on living in newark....
there are some apts that are near the entrance of 280 (interesction of bergen (first st) and dickerson...stay away from those because there are a ton of "bloods" that like to hang out on your frontyard. plus they ride around on those stupid motorcyles till 4am for hours and hours on end.
i live in society hill. i love it here. you should make a parking space a requirement. society hill is divided out into three sections. two sections are on either both sides of west market and the other is on the other side of south orange avenue. the two on west market are the most convenient to get to the dental school. its easy bc u can walk to school if you want. u'll find that if you live out in south orange and take the train in, you still have to deal with the stupid shuttle that is not always on time. your first two years, you will have a ton of exams and dealing with that extra shuttle can be a pain because its not always on time. don't expect to get special txt if your're late to an exam bc your shuttle didn't show up. traffic coming into umdnj can be a pain, but dental students are usually the first ones there so its not as big as a pain compared to med students who show up two hours later..which means first dibs on parking
they're still building the dorm...the exterior is not yet complete. however, the new lecture halls are ready to go and they certainly are beautiful. if u have questions, feel free to ping me. there are things you should purchase before coming in...i'm busy w/exams now, but feel free to ping me in a month

Bloomfield, Nutley, Montclair, Clifton... to start. Take a look at GardenStateApartments.com. They seem to have a bunch of apartments on their for our school.

Good luck!
