So I've been procrastinating on this LLU secondary only to open it and find that the first page of the secondary application is an agreement to the LLU lifestyle.
  • Mandatory religious cirriculum? sure thats fine
  • weekly church service? yeah, i'm cool with that
  • NO alcohol, tobacco, etc. ? ...................... WHAT?!?! this is where I draw the line
Guess I should have researched better before applying there, but that I never expected. Plus I don't understand why, I'm a catholic, and I'm pretty sure Jesus changed water into WINE.

So what should I do with my $100 supplemental application fee? submit it to LLU and do the secondary anyways, submit a primary to a different school, or submit it to Las Vegas this weekend as a protest to this policy?

IMO if you are unwilling to abide by the lifestyle agreement, you are wasting time and $$ finishing the secondary app. If, however, LLU is your only acceptance, would you be willing to not drink/use tobacco for the next four years? I guess it's a matter of priorities.

Well don't apply there. I'm sure if you REALLY wanted to drink, then I'm sure you'd be able to find a way.

Maybe this is just pertaining to drinking on campus? I'm sure you are free to do what you like at home. Unless you plan on getting drunk on campus, or something.

I went to a religious school my first 2 years of undergrad...for them the no alcohol policy was to be adhered to whenever school was in session, no matter where you were. Spring break, christmas break and summer break were kind of gray areas.

The same school also would also kick you out if they found out you were gay, or they would give you the option to seek counsel from a staff member so you could un-gay yourself.

LOL. That sucks. You could always sneak it in! :p

And for clarification, by submit it to las Vegas I didn't mean UNLV, I meant like university of XS, surrender, marquee, and Tao haha

Holy f*ck (no pun inteded). Did you go to BYU? lol. At least LLU will let you have chocolate and coffee.

Nope, it was actually a Baptist school. Other rules were no dancing (meaning discipline if you got caught going to the club), no TV in the dorm room (was lifted my freshman year), censored internet (even google images was censored since I guess you could technically look at porn on google images) girls and guys had only like 5 or 6 hours a week we could be in each others dorm rooms and then the door had to remain opened (and the RA checked) and quite a few other rules. If I didn't get a bunch of scholarship money from them I would have never gone. I guess I also didn't know most of these rules before I enrolled there.

I don't think they can come in your house and check if you're drinking or what kind of drinks you order at a restaurant. Just send in the secondary.

Why even apply to a school which you have no common interest with? I know how important it is to get accepted.. but I'm sure you put more backup schools on your application to have to settle.

Seriously though.. that sucks, good luck. Im glad I didnt apply there, after everyone told me to.

You know that sounds a lot like China and North Korea...the whole censor thing.

This matter has been raised in plenty of previous threads. Yes, you sign an agreement to abide by a policy of no drugs, alcohol or tobacco while you are a student at LLU.

Does this mean that every student abides by the policy? Absolutely not. But it does mean that if it is discovered by the administration, you can be disciplined up to dismissal from the program.

True, they can't search your house, but if you show up for school visibly hungover or smelling of alcohol, or you foolishly post about it on facebook, then you run the risk of being brought before conduct committee.

I'm catholic as well and I have expressed my opinions to administration about this (i'm also on conduct committee). The truth is that their main concern is about the health of their students and the safety of their patients. They will quote studies or anecdotes about how a drink on friday will affect your judgement on monday.

Honestly, it's not that difficult to handle. You're going to be so busy that you would have to really stop and think about the effects before you have a drink. If you're buzzed or drunk, you can't really study. That's been the biggest thing that has helped me when I've felt like drinking. Taking a second to think about what tonight or tomorrow requires of me makes it not worth the impairment.

If drinking really is that important to you, apply to UCLA where the school pays for party busses.

No chocolate? Get your facts straigt before you post ridiculous comments like that.

Oh wow, that's terrible. How are you supposed to have fun on the weekend with your co-ed students to... unwind? I'd avoid it if you have better opportunities elsewhere.

You guys really can't have a good time without drinking?

my thoughts exactly. Many of our students do outdoorsy activities such as hiking, surfing, skiing/snowboarding on the weekends. Plenty to see and do in SoCal that doesn't involve drinking.

It's not a matter of having fun without drinking - it's being prohibited from drinking in general.

Believe it or not, people like to have a glass of wine with dinner or a beer (or five) with friends without getting sloppy.

I think people are offended by how you approached the situation. You have your beliefs and others have theirs...neither one is right.

I heard you can't even drink soda because of the caffeine.

Just don't go. Plenty of other schools in the country. LLU is for folks who wouldn't mind that life style. Personally, myself, and many others would.

My opinion is, if you wouldn't attend the school, then don't submit the $100 secondary fee. Save $100.

True.

No coffee either.

I'm not a drinker or a smoker...but I mean, I think they are taking it over the top with the soda thing, I love my Dr. Pepper.

Does everyone else find this as comical as I do?

If it were me I'd run as fast as I could to another school. I mean really, no soda or coffee? I don't drink either of these but prohibiting it is ridiculous. I wonder if you also get sent to time out if you call someone a mean name.

So basically, LLU still has fun things to do for students who have genital herpes?

Sounds like LLU is due for a lesson in theology.

You are invited as guests, but once inside the house you feel it is up to you to change the house rules to fit your needs, likes-dislikes. Maybe it is time to dust off the much neglected Miss Manners Manual.

Lol, I don't see how I was being offensive. I was merely responding to someone who made the "you don't need alcohol to have fun". It's a fact that some people like to/can drink alcohol in social situations without getting drunk. The debate is not about alcohol being used to have fun. That was my point.

Thanks for the input! I'm going to spend my $100 in Vegas this weekend. Hopefully I can gamble it and win back the $75 I paid for the AADSAS fee to apply there.

Dear sweet baby Jesus...

This is completely FALSE.

LLU does not SELL caffeinated beveraged on campus (although there are a couple soda machines that do). There is no rule that says you can't bring your own. Most people bring their own coffee or sodas.

If this sort of piddly crap is all you can think of when you think of LLU, then don't apply. If you want to have kickass clinical skills and get copious opportunities to do field dentistry in many different countries as well as locally, then you should apply. Believe me, prospective employers are not going to be thinking about the mandatory weekly chapel attendance when they hire an LLU grad over another school's grad.

just tell them you drink for religious reasons. for instance, on friday nights my family says a prayer and we drink wine after. On your friday nights you can do the same...... at a bar or club.

This is funny I went to a baptist school also and most of this was the same, its really not that big of a deal though once you get used to it. I mean the environment is different, if there arent a bunch of people going out drinking its no fun to drink, right? I think the biggest downfall for people at schools like this is not the actual drinking but advertizing it, like facebook or pics on the computer when you take it in to the IT guys who supposedly stumble upon incriminating pics, then there are consequences stemmed from the pictures you provided yourself. You can find a way to do anything you want anywhere as long as you're not an idiot you know? But why put yourself in an uncomfortable situation in the first place, if you're not ok with it thats cool. Save your money and go somewhere where you'll be happy right?

It doesn't sound that bad. But, if you don't think you can respect their rules you should not apply.
