Hi,

I am just wondering if anyone could let me know whether one can either borrow more money or even receive financial aid as an MSTP student? If so, could you please elaborate on the sources or processes? Although the MSTP stipend is adequate for me, I just hope to gather people's opionions in case I need more fiscal freedom. Thanks for your help.

it is dependent on your medical school and their financial aid policies. some allow their mstp's to borrow ~8k of subsudized loans, which are available to all medical students (regulated by the financial aid office), but some don't.

Penn allowed me to take 8.5k/yr of sub loans and around 8.5k/yr of unsub loans. I only took the sub loans. You are only eligible for these loans during med school and they claim that MSTPs shouldn't be eligible for them, so some year they may find themselves ineligible. No further details were provided to me unfortunately, and neither financial aid nor the MD/PhD program will comment further on when/if the MSTP loans will stop.
