Dear Chouhan,
If you are a green card holder you will be eligible for Federal loan and you can borrow it in your name. You should have filed the tax for the previous year or submit a non-filing statement as the case may be. If you are married and filed a joint return (with either or both earning)it is reported in the student's data. You can apply for FAFSA (Free application for federal student Aid)on the web. Though you do not need a pin to start FAFSA, it is processed just the next day if you use the pin to sign and then start your FAFSA.
If you are a green card holder without conditions, you may be able to borrow upto 38,000 or slightly more. With conditions attached you may borrow upto $18,000. The rest may be borrowed in private loans. But the loan guarantee fee and interest rate is usually higher then federal loans.
For private loans, you should be credit worthy(atleast 2-years of good credit history). If you are credit ready (no credit history)you would require a co-signer.I think you can still borrow it in your name, but the interest rate will be even higher without a co-signer.
Finally, if you work and your salary is less than $50,000 a year, apart from the initial $38,000 through Federal loan, you might be eligible for additional aid or grant etc. Federal loan is the best way I guess! Hope this helped you a bit.Go to www.fafsa.ed.gov and you will get all the information you need. There are several sites for private loans.
