I would definitely do research at Vanderbilt which you can work on throughout medical school. It will be very difficult to start a project in California and then finish it in 2 months. Leave it to MS-3 for your audition rotations to show how much you want to go back to California.

No... as in the beginning of second year. The reason it's advantageous to do research at your own school is that in the likely event that you don't finish everything you want to in 8 weeks, you can continue to work on your research throughout MS2. This can be difficult to do if you're 2000 miles away.

Or the summer between MS-1/MS-2, as well. Sometimes u can even get stipends for that.

If I'm not mistaken, Vandy now had a new curriculum with essentially only 1 preclinical year that is extra long. Thus, your summer between M1 and M2 year is rather short. I'm not sure you'll be able to complete much research in this time so it probably wouldn't be worth it to go back to Cali.

That's absolutely crazy. At least make it 1.5 years.

Your best chance of coming back to California is to do great in school and get great LORs. Given this and since Vandy does not lack for opportunities, STAY PUT. The more time you spend with someone, the better they will be able to write you an LOR. Believe me, California programs get tons of apps, a 6 week non productive research experience in California is going to be of little help to your application, except at perhaps that one program and even then who know if your PI will still be there by the time you apply. far better to work on a project over a summer and finish it over the year with a long standing relationship that carries into your rotation leading to a better grade overall and better LOR from someone who has seen you in research and clinically.

I think if you squish things into the summer you can make it 1 year but then second year will be miserable.
