Hi guys, I'm trying to figure out when I'll be able to come home in my first year of dschool at LLU.
Do they observe holidays like president's day?
can I conceivably take off for one weekend a month?
Other than thanksgiving, Christmas break, and spring break, when do I get to come home before September of D2?

Also, what is the daily schedule like in first year? is it basically 8-5 or something?

And have you guys gone to the retreat? How was that?

I'd appreciate any input/opinions those of you who attend may have... THANKS!

llu does recognize most major holidays. you can count on having the usual: 4th of july, thanksgiving, 2-3 weeks for xmas, presidents day, mlk day, 1 week spring break(more like 10 days i guess), memorial day. i think that's about the extent of vacations. summer you get 3 weeks off in june.

the retreat is a good way to get to know your new classmates first year, as it is about 3 or 4 weeks into your first quarter. it is most popular for the 1st and 2nd year students, but there are still quite a few from every class that attend. it's held at a really cool camp in the mountains, out of the smog and heat!! so, you'll want to take advantage of any chance to get away 🙂

thanks chilidog! I appreciate the info.

Is it mostly like a 9-5 deal Mon-Fri?

yeah, for the most part, it will be 8-5, but not always. you'll have labs, usually mon and wed afternoons, so sometimes those will be short and you can sometimes be out by 3 or 4, they rarely go all the way to 5. the other afternoons it seems like 1st years do clinic observation or some other group stuff, so there are some days you'll even have the afternoon off. fridays you'll be done at noon, sometimes have group meetings until 1, but definitely not every week.

...at three years here, I would say that you will have tons of free time your first year. If you put in your study time during the week (or during class, as the case may be) you'll have weekends free to do anything. Then again, I pick up things pretty easily. Some people are drowning in information, and dental things don't come *that* easily to them. Regardless, by your fourth year you'll be seeing patient from 8-5, setting up your cubicle at 7:30 and cleaning up at 5:30. Treasure every free afternoon you have your first and second years... they'll run out before you know it. :hardy:

thanks for the insight guys... so if i have free weekends, could I foreseeably catch a plane home for a weekend once a month or so? don't they keep track of your church attendance? how does that work?

No body is tryingto keep track of your church attendance. That is a personal thing. However, this is not undergrad. Dental school is a committment and while there is some flexibility in your first year, it would be advisable to study as hard as you can. Many others will be and you do not want to be left behind. Having said that going away on the weekends once a month is certainly up to you. Good luck at LLU

Hey ral we'll be in it together... 🙂

keeping track of church on saturday/sunday attendance, no... chapel attendance on wednesdays, yes, for the first two years ...
