Do you guys know anything about Loma Linda? Does it have minimum requirements for GPA and MCAT to receive secondary, etc.

I don't know, but I put them as one of my AMCAS schools (I don't know why) and have yet to hear anything. Their website looks shoddy at best and has some information that is several years old.

I don't think that I will fill out their secondary unless its very cheap or free.

I talked to them last week. They are just now looking at the enterclass 2004 stuff and will have secondaries out sometime in August. They don't even start interviews untill Nov. !

Better be SDA (Seventh Day Adventist) or able to walk on water. Either one or both will do. Heavy Literal Biblical Christian emphasis; not necessarily a bad thing, just not what most people want out of their medical education.

If you're interested in where the SDA church came from check out the millerite movement with ellen white. All I have to say is "The Great Dissappointment".

Ah yeah.... can I get a HALLLELEUUUJAAHHHHH!!!! ... can I get an AAAMMMMMMMMEEEENNNN!!!! ... aaaahhh yes, I can feel the power of the LOOOORRDDD AALLLMIGHTY in the Thread.

 😀

LOL. 😀 MDTom's right, by the way. Loma Linda takes very few non-SDA applicants. You shouldn't apply there if you are going to be bothered by the Christian atmosphere.

one of the docs I work for graduated from Loma Linda 5 years ago. She said that they make u attend church every saturday and even have homework about it. Also, their hospitals and cafeteria don't serve any meat, strictly vegetarian meals.

too bad.

it would have been a good school solely for staying in california.
but that christian $hit shouldn't be mixed with science, the latter often contradicting the former.

entire universe in 7 days? 🙄

is it easy to get into Loma Linda if you are SDA. I never even heard of that religion before lol. Is Loma Linda even a good school?

You've never heard of Seventh Day Adventists?

Anyhow...I'm amazed at how many people bash LL for its religious ties.

I live near LL and its the best hospital in this area. All the difficult cases in the inland empire end up there. Not to mention practically every cancer case in the area ends up there. They have that proton cancer treatment center. I interviewed there my first time around and it was a nice school. They do take a significant number of non-SDAs. One of my friends is Christian and another is Roman Catholic. They also have 1 or 2 atheists in each class. They don't force their religion on you. Even the services are non denominational.

Loma Linda is a good institution IMO. I would have gladly attended if I had gotten in my first cycle. The only drawback is the city isn't the greatest and the weekends are pretty dead. However, that has no reflection on the quality of education one can receive there. I think anyone coming from Loma Linda will be well prepared as a physician.

Are SDA's like Baptists? what are their beliefs?

By looking at their website loma linda is on par with the caribbean schools.

I don't think any medical school should have close ties to a particular religion. Whoa 😱 they take 1 or 2 atheists each year? About half of all the medical school students I know are atheist. They are denying a lot of student on the basis of religion, and that is not right.

Boo for loma linda.

Boo for loma linda.

they must accept a certain number of SDAs because they get their funding from the SDA church. They aren't "denying" people on the basis of religion. Just like the UCs must accept a certain number of cali residents to get their funding.

They are NOT on par with the caribbean. Its a good school.

Anyways...why am I arguing? I always hate getting drawn into these dumb SDN arguments. I'll stop.

exmike: it was KB

Yeah yeah, I know LL isn't as bad as the caribbean schools - I was just putting them down for having stuff on their website that hasn't been updated in 3 years or more. It is not very becoming of a school.

I heard their cafeteria has no mustard or spices, that sucks a$$.

LLU is a wonderful school, even if you don't agree with its religion. If you don't like it, you don't have to apply. About not serving meat in the cafeteria: it's true, but that's because SDAs are vegetarians. I work at LLU Medical Center, and the cafeteria isn't bad at all. 🙂

BTW, someone asked if being SDA is like being Baptist. Besides the fundamental Christian beliefs, SDA is pretty different from ANY Christian denomination, including the Baptist one.

Good luck! 🙂

WHAT!!! NO MUSTARD!!! oooohhhhhhhhHHHHHhhhhh nnnnnooo.... that's it, I'm withdrawing my nonexistent LLU application...

Could you imagine:

Why were you kicked out of medical school again?

I snuck some mustard into the cafeteria... ...

Hi,

I went there for grad school and people are super, super nice. It is a really laid back and welcoming community. Teachers are also really interested in helping the students and the hospital is quite good.

Also, I am non-SDA.
