Hi Everybody,

I am a Junior by years but senior by credit hours. I am applying to both MD and DO medical schools primarily in Missouri (since neighboring states don't seem to friendly about Out of State students). I am super critical of my applications and I know some parts are weak but I am working on them. I would just appreciate an outsiders view on how my application look (minus MCAT scores). Thank you in advance!

cGPA: 3.629
sGPA: 3.708
MCAT: Taking it in May (Very nervous because I am not fantastic on standardized tests)

ECs and Shadowing/Volunteer: (I know this is a little long so I will try to make it as easy to read as possible! I just copy/pasted my list of activities I have for myself)

1) TRiO Student Tutor (1 year)
a. Anatomy & physiology, algebra, composition, biology

2) Student Ambassador (1 year)
a. Tours, new student orientation, help with campus events

3) Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society (3 Semesters)
a. Vice President
b. Commit to Complete Project
c. Research Team Leader
d. Phi Theta Kappa All Missouri Academic Team

4) Helix Biological Sciences Club
a. Member (2 semesters)
b. Public Relations Officer (1 semester)

5) Clubs that I am/have been a Member:
a. TRiO Student Organization (TSO) (1 semester)
b. Scrubs (2 semesters)
i. HOSA (Health Occupation Student Organization (1 semester and 1
competition (pending))
c. Science Club (2 semesters)
d. iGEM (1 semester active)

6) National Youth Leadership Forum on Medicine
a. Medical field exploration: 10 days of going through every step to becoming a doctor (pre-med, interviews, the match) as well as shadowing,
medical school visits, and interactions with many doctors and medical students

7) Shadowing
a. Minimal so far (about 20 hours) Hospital is currently not taking
shadowing students due to cold and flu season but will start back up
next month and plan on shadowing every day over spring break

8) Medical Reserve Corps of South Central Missouri (2 semesters)
a. Trainings:
i. Basic Life Support
ii. Psychological first aid*

9) Undergraduate Research (Started mid last semester)
a. Antimicrobial Glass

10) AHEC Workshops
a. Psychological First Aid
b. FQHC/phlebotomy

11) Getting Ready to Start
a. Living History Project (direct patient contact collecting patient history)
b. Summer Camp Counselor (2 summers)
c. Medical Mission to Peru (in August) with Family Doctor who is Also
writing one of my
letters of recommendation

I know I haven't been involved with any of my activities for more then 2 years because I was a transfer student so I am hoping it doesn't hold me back. Also I am not sure how to incorporate my Peru trip or if I should on my application since it will not take place until I have actually applied. Any feedback would be awesome!! :)

For DO: More shadowing. 27+ MCAT. KCUMB/KCOM will be interested in you at that point. Good shot at DMU as well. OSUCOM might be worth a shot down in Tulsa, they don't take many OoS people but your stats are quite good for DO schools (assuming a solid MCAT).

Thank you for your input! I have so many medical school tabs open on my computer but apparently I haven't really looked into DMU but it looks like a great option! I plan to have ~70-80 shadowing hours by the time I apply which I know isn't extraordinary but I hope it won't hold me back. Thank you again I never feel like my application is even significant. I can do all the shadowing and EC's but I just feel that so has everyone else. I am constantly looking for ways to stand out.

Are you set on staying in the plain states/Missouri region? How about the south/eastern area?
Yeah I am pretty set. I may be applying to one in Georgia but I would love to hear about any that take a significant # of out of state students!

My schools of highest interest are UMKC, KCUMB, MU, and DMU .. I am also interested in A.T. Still (KCOM). Though I would consider other Out of State schools if they have a significant out of state acceptance rates.

Chances are very good but you do need some more patient contact experience. Try nursing homes, hospice, or clinics. Not everything has to be hospital based.

Thank you a lot for your input!! :)

Numbers are stellar, but you need more patient contact experience.
