Hi everyone,

I just joined SDN and i'm in a bit of a sticky situation and would like to get some feedback. I am currently in the application process for the 2016 entering class. I know that med schools like a non-science LOR, but I have taken predominantly science classes and very few non-science classes, since I've saved most of my non-science classes for senior year. I just asked my english teacher for a letter (and I did well and the class and she knows me well) but she turned me down saying that she doesn't have the time. This really messed up my plans, and now I am having trouble getting a non-science LOR. I took a teaching class for being a TA which was through the bio department at my school, and it wasn't really a science class so I classified it under education on AMCAS (the title is Undergraduate teaching seminar). The professor for this class is writing me a letter, but I was wondering whether this would count as a non-science letter? This is my last resort. I would definitely welcome any other suggestions on how to approach this situation.

The best thing to do would be to individually contact all of the schools you intend to apply to. It looks like this was your last resort. Med schools plainly let you know if your letter would count, and it's probably better to find out now, rather than apply and being rejected for a letter that doesn't fit.

Plus they respond within a day!

Thank you asquared for the helpful feedback, I really appreciate it!

One other question, I took a sociology class my freshman year first semester (2 and a half years ago) and at the time I forged a really good relationship with the professor, but it's been a few years now and I'd be surprised if he remembers me, especially since I haven't stayed in touch since the class ended. Should I ask him for a letter? Especially since it has been a while, I'm not sure if he could write me a strong letter, although if I asked him right after the class ended, he would write me a strong letter.

Would appreciate feedback from anyone!

I think you should be fine classifying the teaching prof as non-science.

To be safe, you should ask the sociology prof if he feels he could write you a strong LOR.

Would 2.5 years be a bit to long for someone to write a letter? I'm gonna check with the medical schools first to see if they'll accept the teaching prof, if not then I'll ask the sociology prof.
