This summer I jobshadowed two physicians and I'm sure they'd be willing to hook me up with letters of recommendation. The problem is, I don't need them until NEXT summer. However, I feel that I need to obtain those letters as soon as possible before they forget who I am or feel less obligated to help me out with the LOR's.

Do I request the LOR's now? If so, do I have them sent to me, or should I have them sent to my premed advisor? I can't imagine asking busy doctors to address letters for each of my prospective schools. So, should I have them addressed to "To Whom It May Concern" instead?

For those who have crossed this bridge, how should I handle the LOR issue?

You could tell them your predicament... and see if they 'll write letters now and hold on to them.

You could have them send letters to something like referencencenow.com that will store the letters for you (And has been great for me since I applied to many schools and was able to send letters to any school I wanted with out having to bug my lettter writters. )

or possibly your advisor if he is cool enough to hold on to them for you. My advisor wasnt the type I'd ask that of.

I had people address letters " To whom it may concern."

My school had us submit our letters as we went along. We were asked to have the writers send a letter directly to the premed office. In retrospect, it would be easier to do this but I waited until the end and then ran around asking everyone all at once. I think it would have been better if I had done it as I went along and got it out of the way. People remember you better now, and it can be easy to forget your stellar qualities when it's been a busy year.

Thanks for all your help!
