Hello! I am wondering who we should get letters of recommendation from when applying to OMS after an intern year. Do we get the letters solely from the new program (if it's not where we did dental school) or a combo from dental school OMS faculty and new intern program OMS faculty? Thank you!

There’s no hard/fast rule on this...but i would get one from your chair, one from your PD and then the third is a wildcard but certainly OMFS. Your PD and/or chair should also be calling on your account.

Yes, thank you! However, my question is specifically about if the letters from the PD and chair should only be from my intern program, or also from where I graduated from dental school if I am completing an intern year at a program different from where I attended dental school. Thank you for advice!

yeah...i understood your question. You should have a letter of recommendation from your PD and Dept Chair from the program you’re functioning as an OMS intern. You can get the third from the dental school PD/Chair even though their evaluation of your OMFS potential pales compared to the afore mentioned two.

I had four letters total, three from my program where I did my intern year at and one from my DS from one of my OMFS attendings that I knew wrote me a very strong letter. I have heard a few people who do intern years and don't receive a letter from any of the attendings at their current program...to me thats a big red flag. I agree with Sublimazing though, no hard fast rule on this. Just make sure you get at least one, if not two from your current program (intern year program). Good luck.

Honestly, letters don't matter too much. I'm a first year OMFS resident in a 4 yr program and I've asked a few PDs, and they all say that all letters kind of sound similar. Sure, if someone raves about you, its nice, but honestly, your CBSE score is what is gonna get you interviews and then at that point its your personality, and how well you answer questions that gets you to the finish line (matching). What's your score? 80+ is ideally what you're applying with to give you a very solid shot of matching.

On a side note, would you retake the CBSE if you were me? I got a 201. I’d love to get your perspective as a current resident.
