Central Valley Research:

The Labor Center seeks to hire a graduate student to help with its Central Valley Research Project. The Central Valley Project will gather relevant economic, demographic, transportation and land use research to shape a current community analysis of trends in the Central Valley. Another key component of the project is developing an inventory of labor and community-based organizations. The project also involves handling logistics for leadership development trainings based in the Central Valley.

The student will carry out research under the supervision of Cheryl Brown.

The position will entail:

* Gathering data from varied sources, including conducting interviews with key players in the Central Valley

# Conducting statistical analyses
# Producing reader-friendly graphs and figures
# Producing GIS maps of demographic and economic data
# Event planning, including managing logistics and outreach for research workshop in the Central Valley
Job Qualifications Graduate student in City and Regional Planning, Public Policy, Sociology, Economics, or other relevant departments. Must be familiar with statistical software, preferably STATA or equivalent, GIS packages, EXCEL, and Power Point. Good research and outreach skills and knowledge of labor, economic development, land use or the global economy a plus.



This position is for Summer 2007 and will be 100% FTE and covers in-state fee remission only. However, non-resident students receiving funds to cover NRT through outside agency awards are eligible to apply. Possibility of extending into the Fall (at .49% FTE.) The Energy Employees Medical Monitoring Program is a joint project between the Boston University School of Public Health (BUSPH) and the Division of Occupational Medicine at UCSF. This grant-funded program is a research program and also provides an important community service. We offer free medical screening for former workers (participants) from Lawrence Livermore, Sandia, and Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratories. The focus is on detecting illnesses that may be related to workplace exposures. Data is also reported to the Department of Energy in aggregate, de-identified form to help deepen the understanding of the relationship between hazardous exposures and disease development.

This would be a great opportunity for an undergraduate or graduate student to gain applied experience in occupational and/or public health and gain or improve interviewing skills. Training will be provided for any necessary tasks. This position can be tailored to meet experience and interests, and is flexible in terms of hours worked.

1. Participant Intake: administering an in-person medical and work history questionnaire

2. Outreach and recruitment: respond to participant requests for information and enroll them in the screening program; assist with outreach events and community-based recruitment

3. Database tasks: enter initial contact forms from participants and medical test results; perform data extraction and quality control

4. Administrative tasks: answer the phone, prepare outreach packets, prepare packets for participants with their medical results, track program activities, manage participant paper files and electronic information

Qualities sought:

1. BA or MPH or currently enrolled in an academic program; humanities, social sciences, or public health
2. Energetic, organized individual with good interpersonal skills and interest/experience in occupational health, public health, epidemiology, social science research and/or data entry skills
3. Strong computer skills with all MS Office programs
4. Experience working with databases including FileMaker Pro, MS Access, and/or SQL, MS Publisher skills a plus
5. Work well independently and within a team environment

The University of California, Berkeley, School of Public Health, The Northern California Childhood Leukemia Study (NCCLS) is recruiting for a SAS Programmer. This position impacts the research functioning of the NCCLS and provides data analysis support to investigators and research scientists for a large case-control study of Childhood leukemia.

Job Description/Responsibilities: Create analytic data files used for statistical analyses in SAS or R packages, by merging several complex datasets from various phases of the study. Perform quality checks and basic descriptive analyses. Write detailed and clear documentation for all databases. Catalogue all incoming raw data sets and newly created analytic files sent to or used by various collaborators. Advise research staff on SAS programming (e.g, macro) as needed for conducting statistical analyses and generating outputs.

Requirements & Qualifications: At least five years experience of SAS programming with a minimum of two years intermediate experience in creating analytic files from multi-source databases. The incumbent must have intermediate knowledge in Access and SAS programming to maintain or create complex relational databases and to provide data files ready for statistical analyses. Demonstrated ability to write detailed and professional quality documentation. Effective oral and written communication skills. We conducted an observational study of three parks in San Francisco last May, and are planning to conduct follow-up data collection this summer from May 30 - June 5. Goals of the study are to observe usage patterns of the parks after a renovation to their fields. We are looking for a detail-oriented, responsible individual. Duties of the project coordinator are to coordinate scheduling of 10 observers, oversee data collection, distribute and collect materials for data collection, and perform other duties as needed over the 7 day observation period. Project coordinator will learn the observation method prior to the team of observers, and will assist with research team in conducting training. Though not a requirement of the project coordinator, he/she is invited to recruit as many of the 10 observers as possible, since data is collected in teams and it is ideal if observers know each other.

Anticipated duration of this position would be 4 weeks from May 15th to June 15th (exact dates are negotiable) with some preparation time (12 hours) in April. Flat rate pay of $2,200. (Pay for (10) research assistants is $12/hour for anticipated 35 to 45 hours of work over a two week period.)

Fall 2007: PH 245 Introduction to Multivariate Statistics



Course Description: applied multivariate methods for doctoral and advanced master's students in public health and related fields. Emphasis on principles of statistical reasoning, underlying assumptions, and careful interpretation of results. Topics: multiple regression, regression models with indicator variables. Logistic regression, especially for adjusted odds ratios, techniques for adjusted relative risks. Principal components, factor analysis. Classification methods: discriminant analysis, introduction to CART, use of logistic regression to classify. Introduction to MANOVA. Cluster analysis. Introduction to weighting in the context of large, publicly available datasets with complex survey designs. Computing in STATA, R and SAS.

Qualifications:

1. Ability to facilitate classroom discussion and engage students in problem solving.

2. Ability to communicate statistical concepts to students with little or no college mathematics, emphasizing careful reasoning.

3. Familiarity with material covered in the course. Some familiarity with statistical computing for these models in a Windows environment. (Most of the statistical computing will be done in Stata.)

4. Unless on filing fee, must be a graduate student enrolled in Fall semester for a minimum of 8 units. May not have more than two Incomplete grades. Must have a GPA of at least 3.1.

5. International GSIs must have passed the SPEAK test or equivalent.

Duties: Attend lectures, lead discussion sections/computer labs, hold office hours, assist students with projects, attend weekly team meetings. Credit for GSI practicum in teaching biostatistics is available (2 units).

Project Description
Berkeley Media Studies Group is currently
developing a media advocacy training curriculum
to be offered at The California Endowment Center
for Healthy Communities. The goal of the
curriculum is to train public health advocates to
engage the media strategically to advance healthy
public policy. The curriculum will include
sessions on topics such as the role of the news
media in society, how to create a strategic media
plan, and how to develop and deliver an effective
advocacy message. This summer we will be
drafting, field-testing, and finalizing this
curriculum. As a small non-profit organization,
we value the skills and contributions of public
health students. Since we intend to give this
intern crucial writing projects, please submit a
1-3 page writing sample with your application.
With four School of Public Health graduates on
staff, we are familiar with the goals and
requirements of the internship program.
