So here is a question:

What is the lowest gpa & MCAT score anyone has heard of that resulted in student matriculation to a DO school? Ignoring the excessive extracuricular/research aspects

You want to know it separately or combination of both ? I don't know the combination. I heard that someone with 20 MCAT can get in, the other with 3.0 GPA, but I haven't heard a person with 20 MCAT and 3.0 GPA. I hope I answered your question.

If you get a high mcat and a low GPA or a low mcat and high GPA, you can get accepted at an osteopathic school since they are less picky than MD schools. Once in a while, and MD school would accept someone like this too. However, if you get a low mcat and low GPA, you are out of luck.

In state vs out of state also makes a difference. I've heard of lower than a 3.0 matriculating into DO and I've also heard of this for MD.
I've heard of an MCAT score of some thing like 17 for both as well.

I heard someone on these forums saying they got into their DO school with sub-20 but I think they had a load of other stuff going for them (great GPA, ECs etc). The lowest I've heard for MD school was 24 but there may be lower scores. But all these people had other stuff, be it having a dad who knows the adcom, finding a cure for some disease or bringing world peace. Aim high, don't assume you'll be these exceptions.

I would suggest retaking the MCAT, and taking some upper level courses to boost your GPA. Also consider retaking any low grades you have.

The lowest combination I know of was a 25 MCAT and 2.8 GPA. That was for an MD school.

NonTradMed - I personally know of people with lower than 20 that got into American MD schools. It's rare but once in awhile it does happen.

For an MD school, my friend got 27 mcat and 3.95 GPA and got accepted. For DO, I don't know since I was the only one in my school applying to DO schools. The previous posters say that they know sub 3.0 GPAs goint to medical school. I don't really trust what they are saying but then again they may be right, since there are always exceptions.

How the hell did that happen? Sorry to seem insensitive but I have similar stats and I was told I don't have a shot in hell.

Ummmmm...were you serious about that? Have you thought about making beds in the hospitality industry?

Was I serious or he serious? I haven't taken the MCAT yet and expect to get higher than a 20 on it, but to have that low of an MCAT I was told without 30+ that I don't have much of a chance. My GPA also was with a non-science degree and MBA combined. I'm currently going back for a 2nd degree in biochem right now which is 2 years of all science classes to boost my science GPA. 👍 Even then, most require post-bacc or master work to prove "hard science" requirements. And that is for the DO schools I've talked to as well!

Do the DO schools have a cutoff below which they absolutely won't go? I mean, a 15 on the MCAT is very low. Frankly, if there was a pass/fail cutoff for the mcat, that wouldn't make it. I mean, what's the point of even having an mcat at that point if the scores they accept span from the thirties all the way down to the low teens.

I know someone from my school that was accepted last year to DO school. He had a 3.1 overall, 3.0 science, and a 21. I actually know of a few more not much bett than this. The key is that they had tons of shadowing, exposure, service, etc... Also, They were all just great guys with upbeat personalities. I am willing to bet they did awesome in their interviews.

But also how balanced were their MCAT scores? I have been advised by admissions officers that there is a cut off for verbal. That is the one thing that can't be taught in med school.

How does it look if I've retaken some of my science courses? Do I have to include both the first and second grade on the application. My first year I had some C's.

of course i was joking. notice all the freaking exclamation points.

On AACOMAS application you have to include the grades for all attempts but your GPA is going to be calculated using only the grade for the most recent attempt. It doesn't matter how many attempts you took. All that matter is what your GPA is.
