  1. Resident [Any Field]
I, like many of you, received an offer to interview at LSU New Orleans today via email. I am just wondering if anybody has any info on the status of this program. I previously heard that they were a great program, but I have serious doubts about even interviewing here. How damaged is the department? Do they have any patient population? Will we have any senior residents when we start? I personally think they should have provided this info with the offer to interview. If anybody has any specific knowledge about the status of the program I think we would all love to hear it. Thanks.

I'm an intern at Ochsner w/ my residency at LSU-NO starting next year... I've been meeting with some of the residents here at Ochsner over the last couple of weeks and I've been made aware that all the residents are taken care of and are have not lost any time from their residency... A good number are here and in Baton Rouge (1 hour away) with some in Houma (<1 hour away) which were all sites were rotated at anyways... Unfortunately a handful (3-4 residents) are in Lafayette. Nonetheless, the program meets for one long afternoon once a week in Baton Rouge for didactics. The surgical volume has actually increased considering we've opened up new affiliations with nearby hospitals. The clincial volume here at Ochsner is currently >90% of normal and will continue to grow! It is no secret that we will be spending more time in Baton Rouge than we had previously and is only a minor inconvenience in the grand scheme of things... The LSU Eye Center in New Orleans will be reopening in January with an expected patient population as strong as before as many patients are coming from Baton Rouge, Houma and neighbooring areas... I'm very satisfied and impressed with the hard work and dedication that our program director and chairman have demonstrated over the last couple of months... Unlike Tulane that "folded" and sent their residents out of state, LSU was able to adapt... As someone who is starting my residency next July, I have come to feel that there is no reason for me to worry about the quality of the program... The faculty has been excellent to this point and are very optimistic that the program will continue to excel with the rebuilding of the city... As far as the loss of Charity & University hospitals -- the program was progressively reducing the amount of clinical experience there over the last couple of years and overall does not affect us nearly as much as many of the other LSU residencies...

As far as the city itself -- the French Quarter is up and running again!!! I just had dinner at one of my favorite restaurants a couple of nights ago with my wife and some friends... Nearly all the bars and restaurants are open in the area and it felt like the city of old that we all came to know and love...

Good luck with all your interviews...

Thanks a lot for the post. I am glad to hear the program is still doing well.
