This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I heard white americans are not the majority anymore (population wise). Hispanics are. Does that mean whites are a minority now?

And either way, i am a minority... woohooooo!

the word "minority" is relative.

in colleges, the majority are white & asian.

in prison, the majority are black & hispanic.

Depends on what building you're talking about.

Some schools are sensitive to obstacles that certain
underepresented minorities have to go through to be competitive. For instance, I was the first in my family to go to college.

Other schools turn a blind eye & are apathetic to any socioeconomic inequities. Maybe they're blind or just need glasses😱. Sometimes its kinda hard to overlook the lasting repurcussions of American history. Just ask a native american, if you can find one.

I think most would agree that being in a diverse environment is an education in it of itself & will better prepare you for the REAL WORLD.

DocSaab, last time I checked, white people are large & in charge.

U're soooo funny, diddy.

It depends on schools, but mostly you have to pass the initial screening of GPA, DAT first. Unless u apply to Howard, then if you're AA, you'll be given special treatment.

I thought that desi were not considered urm??

Tinkerbell,
You're not given special treatment if your an african american applying to Howard. They give special treatment to relatives of graduates, then graduates of HBCU's. I heard after California banned affirmative action that most of the people entering dental school were asian and indian. Is this true?

Penn Diddy,
U of TN has the next highest number of AA behind Howard and Meharry, not Penn. I found this article the other day.

I heard that that is true of Asian students, but I don't know about Native Americans. Or do you mean natives of India?

i heard it from somewhere,
the acceptance rate is about the same among all ethnic groups and it's actually lower for asians.

it's because too many asian applicants, and not many black applicants.

There are two types of minorities:

I. Over-represented minority: If the percent of a particular minority group represented in dental schools in the U.S. is higher than the percent of this group represented in the U.S. populations, then this minority group is categorized as over-rep. minority (i.e. Asians).

II. Under-represented minority: If the percent of a particular minority group represented in dental schools in the U.S. is lower than the percent of this group represented in the U.S. pop. then this group is categorized as under-rep. minority (i.e. African Americans, Hispanics).

From what I know, there are some dental schools that give a priority to the "under-represented" minority groups for admission.

Asians are discriminated against. They are an overrepresented minority group. If an Asian is a borderline candidate, he is likely to get axed since his brothers with higher credentials will get in. If you are an Asian male, you have to boast higher credentials in general to stand a chance.

What if your hearing impaired, are you considered a minority, there are not a lot of hearing impaired dentist. Does the same minority rules apply to those hard of hearing. I hope it does,

You guys sure are friendlier and more civilized than the folks in the pre-allopathic forum. Can I stay for awhile? 😛

Just wanted to say that
