What are current M1s planning to do this summer? I'm having a hard time deciding. I have a great idea for a research project that I really want to pursue, but I also would like to spend a month or two the Emergency Department through a program offered by my school. Anyone else trying to decide how best to spend their summer?

I'm going to Italy for three weeks
Raft/Camp the colorado at the Grand Canyon for a week (maybe 3 days if i can't save enough money...)
play with my dog at least 4 hours a day. absolute minimum.
read fiction. write fiction. read. write. read. write. read. write. repeat.

I'm doing a 6 week intership at my school, shadowing some docs and doing a small project based on a patient. It's between 20-30 hours a week, so I plan on spending a lot of time reading, hanging out with friends, actually seeing my family... and probably 1 week of vacation to the beach.

I'm probably going to take a week or 2 of vacation too.

- Probably just take a little time off for vacation, do some leisure reading.
- Do a couple weeks rotation at a local hospital (IM and/or EM) through one of our clubs
- Possibly look into some research opportunities
- *sigh* a lot since it'll be the last real summer off for the rest of my life 🙂

Going to be a bum.

Worked my freshman yr summer, worked in a lab sophomore yr summer, worked in same lab during junior yr summer + studying for MCAT, studied for MCAT round 2 in senior yr summer, went back to lab and worked in 1st summer after graduation, worked in lab 2nd summer after graduation.

I haven't had a free summer in 6 years. Going to enjoy lounging around and doing nothing.

For folks planning on having a free summer, can I ask how you're going to pay for it?

I was toying with the idea of relaxing this summer, but financial aid is cut-off in the summer months and my ability to save $200 out of each month's financial aid all year for summer has not worked out (to put it mildly).

Just curious.

I have worked throughout undergrad. My last semester senior year is a lighter one than usual. I am working extra and saving more...you know, the way that anyone puts away extra money 😛

Sorry, that was more directed at the folks in medical school and how they're funding their summer plans after MSI.

Nice job on setting aside some money for the summer, though....

Hey , I am M1 and was wondering if anyone had information on summer programs, rotations, and clinical exposure that could share ?
thx

Hook yourself up w/someone who has a real job. Pays off all year 'round. No compromises at the beer shop. I plan on doing a little surfin' this summer.

Does anyone know of any good international summer abroad programs that are medically related? My school's programs are seriously lacking.

 Easier just to say "marry rich".

I am also not capable of saving up enough money so that I can bum around all summer, so I will be applying to numerous summer research programs that my school offers and pick from the best one that takes me. If I don't get into any, then I'll probably try and beg my former employer to take me on for a summer, which I imagine they would do (and would actually be a lot easier & less brain work, but no resume boost).

I intend to take a vacation with my husband right after we get out of school for a week (headed over to Cali, with multiple stops along the way - hopefully we can find time to white water raft somewhere along the way!). I also hope that we can take another week long trip just before school starts back up to visit family.

Other than work & vacations, I intend to spend my weekends (where I happily will not have to study!!!) being incredibly lazy... swim a lot... spend time with friends I haven't seen much of... and make good use of our new blender to make plenty of margaritas, strawberry daquiris (sp?), and pina colodas!!! Only 3 test blocks until summer...

If you're at all interested in family planning, Medical Students for Choice offers Reproductive Health Externships all around the country. You can get info about applying on the website: www.ms4c.org. Depending on how you set it up, it can be a pretty laid back but very educational summer, with plenty of time to relax or travel in addition to the clinic work.

doing 8 weeks of research with a professor at my school (in a lab), working for my parents' business, and going to seattle for a week to check out the possibilities.

Neurosurg research lab doing brain tumor biology for 8 weeks. Big dollars and hopes for a decent pub (since nsgy is mad hard to match into)...it should be more fun than class anyway.

You all should check out this website for some ideas: http://msaa.iusm.iu.edu/FinancialAid/Summer%20Opportunities/summer_job_opportunites_2005.htm

Personally, I know I"m going to go on a mission trip for at least 4 weeks. As for what I"m going to do with the remaining 8 weeks...I kind of torn. I could try to do 8 weeks of research, but I don't really feel like it, but I'm not sure how competitive stuff will be in a couple of years, so I may need to. I would really rather do a externship.

thnx ...
has anyone heard about the Prague Selective?

My blue blood classmates go to their condos in Cancun, or Belize to pretend they are building houses.

Don't forget to roll the sleeves up, makes for a better picture ; )

Be sure to pack in clean scrubs when you visit Cameroon, you'll need to seem special when you volunteer to ... uh ... palpate stuff you student doctor you!

All in a day's work, whew!
