Main idea for stories

I am having trouble coming up with the main idea (EK style) for a story. It's easy for an argument, but for stories it seems hard to decide what's important enough to mention. Any advice?

I have yet to see any stories on any practice test and I dont think there are narratives on the MCAT.

The MCAT passages are never fiction. Stories don't have 'main ideas' the way scholarly work does; sometimes they have messages or themes, but that's not the same thing.
