main idea in VR

I have read EK verbal methods on main idea and am still having problem getting main idea whlie reading passages. Are there anything I could do to more actively grasp the main idea? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

what i do is try to get the main idea of each paragraph .. stop after each paragraph and in 5 seconds, ask yourself what the author tried to tell you in that paragraph.. breaking it down to smaller blocks helps me.. let me know if it works

Each passage has a unified main idea. What you should do is get an idea of the author's tone. What is he trying to say? Never mind the details, just get an idea why the author is using the details. Is he exemplifying his point?

Ask yourself, what is the author's point? Don't just summarize or map each paragraph, look at paragraphs as part of one unified theme.
