Haven't heard much, I know it is a UVM affiliate, nice mix of primary care and tertiary care, seems to attract lots of married students, DO's (esp. from UNECOM down the road), and people with an interest in primary care. I would love to stay in New England, so I'm going to apply; Maine is beautiful. But I think I'd rank BIDMC, BUMC, Lahey, Brown, U Mass, Dartmouth, Baystate, and possibly a few Mid-Atlantic/Southern programs (like Maryland-as if they'd ever interview me!, UF, Rochester, JHU-Bayview, maybe a few others), just more opportunities for a single person caught between PC and GI. But, to each his/her own. Good luck, hope to see you at MMC on interview days!

I'm just curious why you are putting Maryland up on such a pedestal considering you have some programs I would think are more competitive such as BIDMC, Brown, and Dartmouth in your post. Also, I sent you a private message yesterday in case you didn't notice it.

hey, I just tried to access my private messages but the link isn't working on my computer for some reason, I promise I'll re-check it later. By no means would I put U of Maryland on a pedestal compared to BIDMC, BU, Brown, or DMS, however, I am a former MD resident and it is a tough program to match at if you are not a grad of the U of M med school or come from a top 25 med school. BIDMC, on the other hand, seems to attract many students from the Boston/NYC area; typically 3-5 students each from Tufts and BU match there every year, a number of other spots this year were filled by students from NYMC, U Mass, Brown, and Einstein. Geography plays a big role, so I'd have a harder time getting into UMD than BIDMC (not to say I'd have a good chance at the latter). As for Brown and Dartmouth, I've heard they are not extremely competitive; in fact DMS didn't fill all of it's spots in categorical IM in 2003. Anyway, good luck to everyone, as far as the original thread, MMC is a very nice program, hope to interview there.

Hey there!
If you're wondering about MMC in Portland, ME....I have rotated there and I also intend on applying for IM residency. There are many residencies as well as fellowships. A fair amount of residents seem to be pursuing specialties, some stay at MMC to complete fellowships, and some go away. I know of one who is at Lahey right now. MMC is one of UVM's core rotation site, so majority of students are UVM. Education wise, I think is outstanding, but I am merely a 4th year...there seems to be good board review for the residents as well, which is important. It's definitely a busy place with plenty of pathology. Residents are very social and like what they do. This is the only IM residency in Maine.
If you have any questions, I will be happy to try to answer them 🙂
