anyone here from pharmacy major to dentist, and why u change it? =)

It's starting!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I actually switched from being a pre-pharmacy major, keeping in mind that I was guaranteed into the Uconn school of pharmacy in the class that started this semester. Why? Because I want to be a dentist and I will. If you follow your heart it will tell you what to choose. I want to do what I love in this life and Dentistry was the way to go...it is as simple as that. gl

I'm actually completing my PharmD next year, but I find dentistry to be a lot more challenging, interesting, and fun.

Wow, you're actually going to be a Pharmacist next year and after all that work you still plan on switching to Dentistry? I think you're making the smart choice, you definitely don't want to end up hating your job.

Keep spreading the good news. Dentistry needs more applicants like you, who want to be challenged and have fun. Not just applicants who are in it for the easy hours and money.

It bothers me when people say, "Yea, I really like dentistry because its a good job to raise a family."

If that's your goal, then don't enter a job where you are responsible for the general public's health. We need people who are willing to spend their free time volunteering in underserved areas. Not people who work 4 days a week so they can go on ski trips with their kids.

I guess I bother you cause that is one of the main reasons why I entered the profession

Honestly, dentistry is the best profession in the world. You get the best of all worlds. Plus, I think it's going to be really cool to check the box that says Dr. on forms and stuff. Up until now it's been Mr. but in 5 years, it'll be Dr. 😉

No, you don't bother me. I just hope it isn't the first reason why you entered the profession.

You've gotta be kidding me...

Screw it, your right. I shouldn't be passing judgement. I just got alittle irritated with this whole influx of new applicants. I mean, I'm sort of skeptical as to why so many premed, pharmacists, engineers, and etc are switching to dentistry. Do they all enjoy working with their hands to fix things? Doubtful. I get the feeling its got to do with money.

But that's cool.

Pharmacists working in retail settings make between 100-120K. Nuclear pharmacists can make up to 150K. Do you think it's about the money when dental school will run you at least 200K in debt and cost 4 years of your life?

Love one another..

When did 4 years of Pharmacy school become free??? Do most pharmacy students not need to take out loans? Also pharmacist do make 100-120k...but their entire careers. Don't get me wrong 100K is good money.

You're right. Now that I think about it, we all want good jobs to provide and help out our families. In this day and age, that in itself is pretty noble too.

I think that it could still be about the money. Especially, when you realize that your potential to make more than 150K is much greater in dentistry. I personally know three dentists in my home town that all bring in over 200K. Two of them make over 300K. I've never heard of any phamacist making anything close to that. It could also have a lot to do with avoiding the momotony of counting pills. My brother in-law is a pharmacist and he make about 90K working at a hospital. He could make a lot more in retail, but it wouldn't be half as interesting. He likes a lot of things about working at a hospital (consulting with MD's, seeing patients, making recomendations), but he's not thrilled about how he gets treated by the MD's he works with, or his potential to make more money. Plus I thought I remembered him going to school for 4yrs also, but maybe it was 3yrs + a residency. He told me he was only about 100k in debt so yeah there's an advantage there. I just think it really comes down to liking what you will be doing day in and day out.

"Get rich quick" types are toward the bottom of the list of people I'd want beside me in dental school, but "sanctimonious social martyrs" sits right beside. Yes, we have a social responsibility as professionals, but I also have personal responsibilities as a husband, friend, & colleague.

Well said, Dr. Phil. 👍
