Do med schools care about what you major in? I am interested in Women's Studies but I am worried that med schools will view it as not being as rigorous as a science major. Anyone care to comment on this?

Thanks!

Major in whatever you're interested in. Med schools don't care. Just do well in your classes and the med school prerequisites. That simple.

Yes! Medical schools do not give a rat's ass what you major in but you would be well advised to major in something that you really love, like Women's Studies. Studies have proved that non-science majors do just as well as their science major counterparts in medical schools. You're going to have to take all the core pre-med classes (bio, o-chem, chem, physics, etc) anyway, so go ahead and major in the subject that you love.

Absolutely not. Every major is accepted into medical school if you take the prerequisites.

We have music, religion, aviation, political science, and other majors.

it'll be a PLUS, if anything. they love diversity and women's studies is unique. just do well in your math/science classes and you're good. even better, take some upper-level bio courses and you're golden!

so changing from bio to psych wont be such a bad idea? Cause i like psych more than bio.

Changing it isn't a bad idea if that's psych is what you love. I say go for it.

Major in WHATEVER YOU WANT. Good luck, and kick ass in college 😉

I majored in Linguistics in college, and YES, it was a much less rigorous major than bio or chemistry, but what was important was that I had a blast studying it. I figured that college was my only chance to study something completely off the wall. What I needed to learn to be a doctor I would learn in medical school.

BUT-- you still have to rock your pre-reqs (i didn't). I had almost a 4.0 in my linguistics major, but only a 2.95 in my pre-med reqs. One of the things I addressed in my personal statement was "why not go into linguistics-- why still medicine?" I anticipated that the adcom would question the huge discrepancy in my grades. I was SO good at linguistics, but only mediocre at my science classes. So in my application, I tried to put forth what I felt I gained from studying linguistics, and how those skills will be an asset in medicine. As it turned out, I wasn't asked about that in my interviews, but maybe it's because I already addressed it in my PS.
