How important is it to build a lot of connections as a DO student? Is it necessary for getting into more competitive residencies, like radiology?

It's important to build lots of connections in any walk of life. Who you know can take you a lot farther than what you know.

As someone going into radiology... connections are helpful but not required. I would have plenty of interviews without connections but would not feel confident at my top choice without having had connections (a letter from an accomplished grad with a phone call to the PD), for what that's worth.

The saying "who you know, not what you know" unfortunately hold true for a lot of medicine. This is especially true for competitive programs.
