although most if not all PD's have access to the match statistics at this point, only the applicants who are scrambling will know where there are unfilled spots as they will be granted access to the list of programs with openings for their scramble

sorry to those of you who did not match... there are only 2 categorical surgery spots in all of the nation... there are more ortho (3) and neurosurg (3) spots... luckily there are 460 prelim surg spots, so that is a better chance of scrambling into something

Matched as well.

But this seems to correlate with the idea that general surgery is cycling back to being more competitive.

did not! congrats to those that did.
No match for me. Scramble here I come!
Both of the SDNers who have shared their match troubles so far are DO students. I'm wondering if anyone could compile a list prior to next year's interview season of "DO-friendly" programs. Hopefully, that can help our DO's know where to apply.

To you guys specifically: I'm sorry, and I know you feel really crappy right now, but you can still secure a strong preliminary position in the scramble, and it's important to stay vigilant.

Good luck tomorrow.:luck:

Just adding my own input: There was a prominent DO SDNer a few years back that had a rough match week, did a prelim year at Vandy, and thanks to google, I guess he's now a PGY-4 at Good Sam/Trihealth in Cincinnati....I would add that program to the "DO-friendly" list to start.

Also, a bonus of the thread link is to see some of the early troll genius that was Misterioso.

There are two ways to do this:

1. Find a program with high attrition so you can slip into a newly-opened spot down the line. The problem there is that usually there's a reason for such a high attrition rate.

2. Find a prestigious program that can help you match based on good letters and name recognition.

I remember someone saying a while back that Mayo places a large # of their prelims into categorical positions, and there is data available to back that up. So, if you're okay with living in Rochester, MN, that might be a good start.

How can you find out what programs have high attrition rates? Any other tips on what programs take prelims as cat. assuming all things go well that year.

Thanks

You're right, I do feel really crappy right now, but I'm keeping my head up. Thank you for the consolation. In general, I think the Midwest and East coast programs are more receptive of DOs, so if you're in the same boat as me, I would recommend starting there. I was waitlisted for a categorical spot at a SC program that I really liked, so I think that's where I'm gonna start when the scramble begins tomorrow.

Congrats to all the matched people! And for those that didn't match - make sure your cell phones are fully charged before you go to bed tonight and good luck in the morning (or noon if you're on the East coast).

My first choice was also in SC. Will try and compile a list tonight. Its a very sobering feeling, and cant help think am a failure despite putting in my best effort. But, anyway, still got the will to make it though. I hope things work out for us scramblers tommorrow. Congrats again to those match. You deserved it!

Matched!!!! Yay!!! :xf:

To the scramblers, know that everything works out for the best and everything happens for a reason. My road was convoluted too but the road I took led me to more I could have ever wished for. In fact, I've met a few residents along the way who scrambled into a much better spot than they would have gotten into otherwise. So best of luck to you guys! :luck:

Congratulations to everyone who matched. I will be proud to call you colleagues.

For those who didn't match, know that there are still options and the game isn't over yet. Let us know if we can do anything to help and keep us updated, as your experience will help others in the future.:luck:

:soexcited:Matched!!! Categorical!

Sorry to gate crash your party. Gas applicant here. Thought I'd announce here since we will be the quintessential happily married couple and are joined at the hip for life now (surgery and gas). And our forum doesn't have this thread yet.

Not that I object to you posting here but I'd the gas forum doesn't gave the thread you can always start it. :)

yeah but it won't have enough guns or Israeli-Palestinian conflicts or porn comments in it. That would be a huge problem. Anyway, not as vested to start any thread.

St. Patrick's Day being the day before Match Day... coincidence? I think not.

Also, I can't believe I neglected to make a cheesy "Beware the Ides of March!!" post yesterday.

Didn't match a Cat. Going to continue on the prelim road to year 2. Prelim years are stressful for those choosing that route. Congrats to the surgeons.

Boodles is the only gin to consume orally. Now you can use that Tanqueray for massage purposes. I never let any tonic anywhere near my Boodles.

I do mix the tonic with Grey Goose vodka.
