Suppose an individual matches into an IM residency, how hard would it be to match into a GI or Cardio fellowship afterwards?

depends where you train.

random community program with little research? very difficult

strong university program? very attainable.

University program + AMG makes your chances actually pretty high as long as you work hard and partake in some research effort along the way.

AMG just means American Medical Graduate right?

Suppose one is able to match into an IM residency in one of NYC's academic hospitals, the chances at matching into GI and Cardio is fairly good with reasonable effort?

In a somewhat more serious response, like others have said above it really depends on where you go and what you do while you're there. Columbia, Cornell, MSSM, and so on then obviously your chances are greater than if you went to Downstate for example

Yeah. Pretty much. You still need to be a solid resident.
