I realize this question has been answered before, in part. Mostly, this question is asked in context of finishing a pre-req though.

Anyway, I register for classes this Monday, so I'm trying to decide whether to take calculus or statistics. I made a 5 on the AP Calculus AB exam, and would like to complete the calculus sequence -- but we live in a world where we must play the GPA numbers game.

In addition to the math class, I will be taking the standard biology/chemistry first year sequence along with a one hour research class. This leaves me with an open class, which will likely be devoted to an interesting honors seminar or other non-science non-mathematics class. The current dogma of the forum seems to scream, "Don't sacrifice your GPA!" I, however, would like to learn more calculus. I could, theoretically, take calculus II spring semester, but I fear my calculus I knowledge would have atrophied by then.

What would you do?

EDIT: To be clear, I would plan to take calculus III after calculus II; this isn't just to fulfill a prerequisite. I'm interested in calculus, but I don't want my GPA to suffer for my curiosity, deviation from the norm, needless hubris, et cetera.

You have answered the question multiple times in this post. You like calculus, you are interested in it, and you would go so far as to take cal III. Take the class and enjoy it. If you work hard enough, your GPA won't suffer.

I needed to hear this from someone else. With all the gloom and doom talk about its difficulty, I have come to fear what calculus II could do to my GPA right out of the gate. Thanks for the response!

Calc really isn't all that difficult, especially since you've already shown a certain amount of aptitude by pulling a 5 on the AP exam. If anything, I would suggest that it would be beneficial to your GPA to take it at this point...

Cal 1: One of the easiest maths you take in college
Cal 2: WTF just happened
Cal 3: *There is no way this can get harder... **** nvm...*
