hi all,

okay, i know the max amount anyone can borrow from the government is $38,500. typically this includes $8,500 of subsidized stafford loans and $30,000 of unsubsidized loans. if, for my first year at least, i won't qualify for subsidized loans, can i bring the amount of unsubsidized loans up to $38,500, or does the unsubsidized cap remain at $30,000?

thanks!!

The total amount you can borrow from the Stafford loan program is $38,500 in one year, of which no more than $8,500 can be subsidized.

The total you can borrow will be determined by the financial aid office of your school, so it would be best to check directly with them to know how you they will allow you to borrow. There are non-federal loans available as well.
