May 15--What does the date really mean?

OK. I know you must pick one acceptance by that date and cancel other acceptances. I also know that you can hold multiple waitlists. However, what happens if you get another acceptance at another school you like better? Can you drop the designated acceptance and take the new one? Or is everything set in stone by May 15? Please help...I'm super confused.
 
As of May 15th you can only hold one acceptance, of your choosing. If offered another acceptance, you have to decide PDQ whether you'll hold your existing one or take the one offered. I wouldn't think it would be a tough decision - I don't know why you'd be on waiting lists you weren't interested in attending over your current option.
 
Thanks so much. The question wasn't in regard to my waitlist schools. I am still clinging to the hope that I'll get into my state school. BTW, what is PDQ?
