I've recently read a great deal about combined MBA and MD programs, but I really don't know anything about the application or how to get into such a program.

Sure, there's the straight get into a medical school and get your MD, etc.

But what about combined programs? I heard you have to apply for that program during the medical school application? I also heard it's something you apply for during your third year @ the medical school. (Forgive me for my ignorance)

Can anyone give me general details?

Also, aside from saving time, why not just get your MBA before MD?

Thanks in advance

from what I've seen, both admissions pathways are common, as far as the dilemma of applying for a dual degree during the MD app process or after one has entered med school.

why not just get your MBA before MD?

well, every program is different, but I've heard that in some dual degree programs the MBA part can be done during summers between med years, adding only~1 year on your MD degree (total of ~5 yrs) as opposed to getting a 2 year MBA then an MD (total of ~6 yrs). also, many MD/MBA programs can give you very specific training in health care management, which could be useful in running a practice, "selling out" and woring in industry, etc.

as usual, just $0.02, somebody correct me if I'm nuts...

Does anyone know how hard it is to get into Penn's MD/MBA program offered through Wharton?

I'm sure that it is impossibly difficult, or at least close to it. My question is, why would anybody even want to get an MBA? People who have them know they are useless, so why should an aspiring physician even bother? If you really want to learn about finance, read the Wall Street Journal everyday, because you'll learn much more there, and will save a ton of money. If you simply want a legup on your quest to open a private practice, excel in your medical studies, get a good general manager on board and you're golden. If what you really want to do is collect degrees, get a PhD, or better yet a JD. These are much more useful in a physician's life.

while you can argue if you wish that MBAs are useless, there nevertheless exists a career ceiling in the buisiness world to those without them.

i would imagine that the MD/JD is much less useful.

I agree with you, indycx. In addition, if you pick the right combined MD/MBA program you will enjoy a bussiness currilculum that focuses on healthcare management. Such a degree would be quite useful to a physician who wanted to someday run a hospital or a large practice.
