I have been considering possibly requesting a rescoring of my mulitple choice sections on the MCAT. On both the PS and BS, I misbubbled (skipped a bubble/question) and had to erase a full row in order to place all of the answers up one. Do you think this could have affected my scoring? Does AMCAS put the scantrons through a machine? When they rescore - they do it by hand, right? I know that I erased pretty well when I rebubbled my questions, but perhaps the scantron machine counted some wrong. Although, I'm afraid that if I rescore - I might come up with a lower score - although I doubt it. It might be beneficial to rescore if they used a scantron machine to come up with the initial score. Does anyone know if they do?

Yes, it could have affected your marks. I'd imagine they used computers to score all the scantron sheets. I highly doubt they'd mark any by hand. I'm don't think they will re-align your bubbled answers for you though. I'd ask about that though, because from what I've read from other people's posts, it costs ~$50 to rescore your test. I don't know if they do it by hand or not.

The problem isn't that the answers needed to be realigned. I ended up putting the proper bubbles with the proper questions. It's just that there was a little residue from where I had bubbled a different answer previously. I erased as best I could.

I thought the purpose of a re-grade was for a person to actually look at the exam. What's the point of just running the test sheet through the computer again? It's not like the computer will produce a different result.

It says so on the AMCAS site that they regrade by hand. I was just wondering if any of you think it might be reasonable for me to request a regrade for my MCAT.

im my whole testing career ive never seen the scantron mess up because i hadnt erased enough.
But if it helps you fall asleep at nite you should do it =).

man, look at us, this test is warping our minds.

i could have been on the rock but i could have SWORN that the test said to blacken completely, do not leave any stray marks, erase completely. so, if you did not do those things, i guess it could matter. dig up an old aamcas practice test for the bubbling instructions, if that helps. or call someone so you don't have to shell out whatever it is . good luck either way.

I know that this semester all of our tests have been scantron, and two professors have explicitly reminded the class after a test or two that erasing needs to be complete and clean because they have caught several cases where the machines miscored an answer due to residue.

Man, was that a run on?

Anyway, chances are that it wouldn't mess up many... probably one or two answers out of an entire row. And chances are that one or two correct answers won't move you up another scaled point, and if it does it would only be by one point. But there is a slim chance that it screwed up a dozen too, and it only costs $50 for a rescore.

Does a rescore request get tacked onto your scores or application in any way? If so, you have a decent explanation, though it doesn't look all that great to have to admit to an adcomm that you misbubbled a whole row on such an important test (but it happens). If it doesn't get reported at all, then I say you have nothing but a little cash to lose. I wouldn't expect any change in the score, but stranger things have happened.
