Many students drink caffeine or energy drinks whilst studying for the MCAT. This increases focus and concentration, but can also incur disastrous consequences on their bowels- namely, diarrhea. This happens because caffeine enhances the gastrocolonic response, impedes water resorption by the colon, and - along with it's metabolites - relaxes the smooth muscle of the anal sphincter. The result: epic diarrhea. To avoid these problems students may want to take a low dose of immodium before studying, or do so in the bathroom.
