My plan is to take the april MCAT, However i will not be taking physics 2 until summer. I dont want to wait to take august and getting my app. in so late. Is it possible to do well on the MCAT 35 and above without physics 2. thanks

Sure it's possible to score a 35+, but you have your work cut out for you. I don't know what your first semester of physics covered, but you need to completely understand such topics as electromagnetism, optics, waves, etc. You have 12 weeks left before the MCAT - start studying physics hard.

Wow... only 12 more weeks till the next MCAT? Glad I'm not taking it.

i got a 35 with and had only half of a semester of physics II when i took it (i took a test with my calculator in rads instead of degrees.... so i ended up having to drop the class)

you'll need to spend some time learning about optics and e/m topics, but you can definately do it.

good luck,
s

There will definitely be a section or two on magnetism and/or electricity. Great chance of an optics passage as well. So to answer your question, wait.

I did reasonably well on the physical sciences without Physics II, just review the basics of optics and magnetism from a comprehensive review book. It isn't worth it to delay the test because of Physics II.

If you haven't had Physics II, then I'd suggest either taking a prep course that will show you the basics or really study it hard on your own. The administration of the MCAT I took was heavy into the electromagnetism and that stuff can get sticky.

Just because it works for you doesn't mean it will work for the average Joe Premed.

Hey are you questioning my purely anecdotal evidence? But yes, I suppose how well you learn in a self guided environment will be an important factor.

No physics II for me. I did very well on the PS section.

Every MCAT is different. The one I took had a significant amount of physics 2 topic questions on it (optics, radioactive materials). So if you are not taking Phys 2, I agree with the posters who said to make sure you take a good review course and learn that material on your own.

Didn't take Physics II got 13 on PS. Its possible

I had only one quarter of physics (of three total) when I took the MCAT and still managed a 9 on PS. Just make sure you do well with the gen chem stuff.

Yeah I think so, as I see there are others like yourself who can do it, but I imagine it's not a very common ability.

take it in april. just be sure to allow extra time to teach yourself all the physics II stuff. or take a course.

i took the mcat without orgo II so that i could take it on time... best decision i ever made. applying early is way more important than that one or two point difference in your mcat score.

my 2 cents...

i had that same question when i took the mcat the first time, got 11V 9B and 7P!! so to answer your question dont do it b/c if you have one heavy on magnetism like mine its over for you. then again you might not have anything like that and do fine. its luck

It seemed like nearly all the physics on my MCAT was from physics II. I can't image a passage about a ball being shot from a plane at a 30 degree angle. Obviously, people can teach themselves the material but it seems like a serious added burden.

What about the MCAT without Organic 2 ? I am taking this fall, and need to know wether I'd just be wasting money taking it in April.

You can probably get by without organic 2, especially if you have taken biochemistry or have a little biochem knowledge. Isn't the amount of orgo being drastically reduced on the MCAT anyway? But like the other posters, I'd recommend a prep course if you can afford it.
