McGill's a great school; as long as the adcom people are somewhat educated, and attended a decent institution then they should be familiar with the school. However, I'm not sure of its reputation on the west coast, but I do know its well known on the east coast, and to a lesser extent known in the Midwest. I’d say your best bet is to apply to schools in the Boston, New York and Philadelphia areas, but this is just my two cents

would schools like USC treat ucla/usc ugrad in higher regard than mcgill? what about schools in ny/ma/pa, would they treat it lower than duke?

You are asking really bad questions here, it's almost disheartening. I'm guessing you are a high school student looking to choose your undergrad school?

I don't really have answer to that, but I know from my own experience in high school McGill was considered more prestigious and a far better institution to attend for college than USC or UCLA, but it wasn't as impressive as Duke. I think you can expect your grades and your education to be taken seriously because you attended one of the best universities in North America, but it most likely won’t garner the same prestige or respect as an applicant from Middlebury or Stanford.

that sucks. i'd need a lot of prestige to make up for my mediocre gpa. on mdapplicants i often notice students from top schools who get cut some slack, as long as they get high mcat's...

I know [http://www.xoxohth.com|this site] often discusses how Canadian schools are known for rampant grade deflation--maybe you might be able to find solace in a post here

most of the people are at ivy or comparible schools; they'll actually be able to give you better adivce

Your undergrad. institution does not matter hardly at all. All that really matters is your GPA and your MCAT.

They may actually like the fact that you went to a non-US college. Med schools love diverse students.

Yes, agreed. I don't think I would have my acceptances if it weren't influenced my undergrad's reputation, and my interviewers have even told me the same. What I was also told was that my (high) MCAT score gave my GPA and coursework at this institution much more of a context. Perhaps the situation is different for DO schools where DrTrek had been accepted to.

Let me rephrase. Unless you went to a TOP school, it really doesn't make any difference. Sure, a 3.0 from Harvard may look impressive. However, with a 4.0 from University of Unknown, you are still going to be very competitive.

Although it may carry some weight if you went to a top school, not nearly as much as your GPA and MCAT score do.

And to clarify your reply, DO schools place the same emphasis on undergrad. instutituions that MD schools do in that it is not that important unless you went to a top, well-known college.
