Im in my first year of podiatry school. Im just curious if anyone might have a clue if we are even allowed to apply to MD programs after finishing some form of professional school?

-Would podiatry school (considering I do well) be of a benefit while applying?

I had a really high MCAT my freshman year of college which was 2012, (38) but it expired, and my second MCAT wasnt so hot , 501.
At this point im 22, and want to finish podiatry instead of spending another year wondering if Ill get in or not, but could I apply to MD programs, and the above questions, after podiatry school?

I'm pretty sure you can, but IMHO I think it would be best to work for a few years first.

There are many things I can say about this, but I actually think this is not possible...

Its not impossible but the people who change professions are generally the people who go to podiatry school, start working as a podiatrist, then have a change of heart and decide to get a MD.

Don't go to podiatry school with the plan of using it to boost your Medical School application.

Going from a 38 to essentially a 25 is an outstanding drop.

Not to mention that 2012 was 5 years ago and you say you are 22? So you took the MCAT as a 17 year old and got a 38?

It is, and I started college at 16.5. I took general chem and physics in college as a high school student. I started as a sophomore in undergrad (at 17.5). I graduated in 3 years with a degree in engineering. I took it in 2013, my apologies, received one pretty damn bad grade in undergrad (I had my mom pass away and if you missed any lab sessions it was an automatic F in the laboratory part of my course), so I thought my chances for MD schools are ruined. I started planning to go to the Caribbean route, backed off, decided to work in the engineering field for about 1.75 years and now im in podiatry school. The new mcat is pretty difficult honestly with a huge emphasis on biochem, biology in the physical science sections, demphasis on organic, and the social sciences, did not study for any of them,.

One of the DO schools use to have a program to fast track pods to DO

Thanks. I believe youre referring to NOVA southeastern, Ill probably contact them after my first semester or year here, but from the SDN information thread about that program(albeit they may be total ly false), the degree doesnt translate to being able to practice as a DO for some reason.

You got a 38 on your mcat and received 1 bad grade and you thought your chances of MD were over? What exactly was your GPA?

Tbh after getting that F I thought even the island schools wouldnt take me. My gpa isnt too hot anyway, its like a 3.4, and my science GPA is probably a 3.5,

The few DPMs that I know who went on to MD did so after earning their degree and practicing in the field

Did you get a chance to speak with them 1 on 1. Without having you go in detail, did you feel they were extremely unhappy with podiatry? was it more of a prestige/ money issue?

That GPA along with a 38 MCAT is competitive for medical school. I just find it hard to believe how someone with a 38 MCAT and reasonably competitive GPA thought that they weren't competitive for a Caribbean medical school. Even a 28/3.4 is still competitive for DO schools.

I realize what youre saying, and I know that now. Ive known it for a year. But I thought an F would like automatically disqualify me from them looking at me,. Thats why I didnt apply, and applied to the carribbean, then backed off.

Man, your words are not productive. This is too late to say all these things / to be regretful. Now I think the issue is very very different to OP.

If you got a 38 on the old MCAT, you have the potential to do very well on the new one (520+). You're just gonna have to work hard and learn the material. And that statement isn't true for everybody. Whether you want it badly enough is up to you.

I could, it would be a year of work, then a year to apply, just not my cup of tea right now given that DO programs will let me finish the DO degree in 3 years.

Well if you can get into them, go for it.

I forgot volibear was a champ, but it is possible all depends on you though

We can all agree MD would be a bit (Yuuuge) long shot to get into with the F, my current MCAT, and GPA.
Ive been poking around the DO sector, theres a guy named goro who basically said DO schools would be reluctant to accept anyone who withdraws from another program (carrib, pod, PA etc).
At this point ive already finished 3 weeks of school so I guess I would have to mark "previously attended medical school" on the application.
Further more my GPA as I Said wasnt too hot, but my feeling is, at my podiatry school, a good amount of people get 4.0's (My undergrad was one of those colleges with only like 20 students per class and the professor still cut the maximum # A's at 15%) .

Anyway I appreciate everyone's input, thanks guys

I don't agree that one F makes MD a longshot, especially with a good reason. @Goro would definitely be someone to talk to about this, he knows the DO admissions process very well and has been around a while.
