Hi SDN,

I have a friend currently applying to the University of Utah's MD program. She said that the U of U SOM wouldn't consider your application if you were currently enrolled in any master's program. (Apparently, they want you to finish your degree before applying to their SOM -- too many applicants were dropping out of their master's programs upon acceptance to med school, apparently!). Has anyone heard about this? Do the UCs hold a similar policy? I'm planning on doing an MPH in one year, and apply to med school during that year. Will this be a problem?

Thanks,
Tyler

I'm completing my MPH this spring and will graduate in May. Applying this cycle and have not had any problems, UC's included.

You declared that you will have an MPH before you start medical school. I think that if you decide to drop out of your MPH program, the school has the right to revoke their acceptance. But I'm not sure..

Yes, this sounds correct. If you started a two year Master's program in fall of 2008 and applied for admission to medical school for 2009, the medical school will either reject your application or will revoke your acceptance once they find out that you won't be finished with your Master's program until after you've been accepted. In general, medical schools don't like to see applicants dropping out of a program to go to medical school before they are finished with their degree.

Most adcoms say that an applicant who drops out of a graduate program either lack commitment or are indecisive about what they want to pursue (this is a bad sign since the same applicant may drop out of medical school if they aren't interested in a two year program).

Medical school acceptance is typically contingent upon finishing up the degree you're working on, undergrad or grad. So long as you'll be done by the time you matriculate, they're satisfied. Hence, applying during the academic year of graduation for you is totally fine.
