My school doesn't offer a joint MD/MBA program..I was thinking of going through an online MBA program through my alma mater.

Has anyone done this/heard of anyone doing this?

Is this even possible to do? If so, would I be required to tell my medical school about it?

Are you sure they'll accept you? Most MD/MBA programs are deliberately created exceptions to the rule that you need significant work experience before applying to an MBA program.

There are some MBA programs designed specifically for physicians. I think you should look into it. I think tennessee has one. I'm not sure about online though. its worth looking into if you dont get to do it at your alma mata.

I don't think those are generally for medical students either. Tulane has one (it's called a Masters in Medical Administration, I believe), but it requires you to have been in a leadership role as a physician for several years before you can even apply. Even applicants for the Tulane MD/MBA program are only allowed into the normal MBA program, not the MMA program.

Also, is the alma mater a good business school? The usefullness of an MBA has (from what I've heard) more to do with the prestige of the program than your medical degree does. Is an 'any school' MBA really going to advance your career? Of course if your alma mater is Harvard you can ignore that problem.

Thanks for the responses,

Haha, No my alma mater isn't Harvard, but still consistently ranked in the Top 8-20 or so for business schools each ranking.

I worked all throughout undergrad and during the year I took off after graduating..also in High School I delivered flowers for a florist:thumbup:..although not really sure if any of it would classify as significant work? Still, friends of mine are currently in MBA programs already, only 1-3 years post undergrad, with no work experience during High School/College and working bs jobs now.

My alma mater does have both MBA and MHSM (Health-Sector Management).. Not sure which would be more useful? Always wanted to get into the admin aspect of medicine eventually...but via private practice or hospital-setting? Not sure. Lots of older docs always telling me how they wish they had taken some business classes when they had the motivation makes me think I should at least try before the gunner in me sets sail for a faraway land. Also, with the economy the way it is, many undergrad institutions are offering easier admin requirements for alumni looking to come back to school.
