Are MD/Phd programs always more competitive than MD programs at schools? Or does it vary from school to school?
It does vary from school to school. However, they are pretty competitive. If you have decent stats and plenty of research experience you should be good to go. I think, mostly, they are worried about the amount of research experience you have. They are competitive but they'll probably give you a look.
I think they look for a little bit more than "decent" stats. If you look at most people admitted to md/phd programs, they have stellar GPAs and MCAT scores (on par or higher than most students admitted to regular md programs). The research, as you mentioned, is the most important part (but doesn't subsititute for subpar stats), and good candidates have strong research backgrounds: Not just simply x number of man hours of research, but publications (although not essential), posters, presentations, grants, awards, and LORs from PI's that speak to your potential to be a future physician/scientist. Of course not every applicant will have all of these things I listed, but there are some very accomplished people who apply to md/phd programs each app cycle. I don't mean to scare you, but md/phd is a much more competitive pool than regular md programs, but its doable, just know if you are going to do research, give it your all!
its not hard to get into an md program and then transfer to a md/phd program at that school?
