Has anyone heard of the profession changing the letters over to MDO instead of DO? I heard this in passing and thought it would make sense and probably decrease the explaining osteopaths have to do (basically an MD plus Osteopathic techniques).

Just wondering how likely a switch might be and anyone's thoughts about it.

highly doubt it. from what I read is that DOs are proud of their initials and wouldn't change it to MD. DOs in Cali were given the opportunity in the 60s and only small percentage actually changed their degree from a MD to DO and from what I understood it didn't change anything in terms of any prejuidice they suffered back then.

How exactly would that decrease the amount of explaining? We would have to explain what a DO is, then explain what an MDO is.

Whoever told you that the profession is doing that is very much mistaken. It's a silly idea, anyway.

Stupid idea. Not going to happen.
