Does anyone understand what the third question is really asking for? Do they just want an experience that you had with diversity? Or does it have to be something in the health care field? Their definition of cultural competence is making me wonder what they are looking for. Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks

I think that question is the most ******ed question, yeah I said that in a post before, but that tells you how serious I am. I'm writing about how I volunteer at the hospital and have dealt with a mulititude of poeple: deaf, imobile, wheelchairbound, sick as hell, children, Koreans, just to name a few. Are you only answering the third question? 'Cause that's the only one I really need to answer. Talk about a "Dark Ages" medical secondary, all handwritten, whats that about?

I haven't gotten mine yet, but now that I know its handwritten, maybe I don't want it!!!! LOL

When did you guys get yours? I live in Ohio so it shouldn't take too long to get here

I got mine saturday, but I live about 10 minutes from MCO.

Shanequin--
Yes, I am only answering the third question, and I do agree with you about how dumb it is. Where do you see that we can only handwrite responses? I just reread the pages I got, and I don't see that anywhere. I see that we can attach another sheet, but they don't specify any length or anything. I wonder if I am missing a page with more instructions on it.

ESPN--
I just got it yesterday, and I am in Michigan, so I am sure you will be getting it this week!

I'm from CA and I got the secondary yesterday.

I dont see why you guys are complaining about the essay. It sure beats BSing about "why did wish to attend blah blah med school".

Cultural competency is EXTREMELY important to health care. Anyone outside of clinical medicine is probably quite aware of it. Anyone trained in public health is definitely awared of it. Unfortunately, lack of cultural competency often prevents health care providers from giving their patients, especially minorities, the best care they can. I'd keep rambling, but then I'd give away my essay.

😛

No, I have no other instructions. I think I am going to make my final response maybe a page. Im going to type that up and attach it, but Im talking about the other stuff about like the course work, address, driver's license number, etc... Maybe I'll dust off my old typewriter and use that. But that sucks. Leave it to Toledo, my hometown, to make it difficult.

I too agree that cultural competence is really important to health care. But I guess I'm sick of the cookie cutter essays. Those kind of essays, like why do you want to go into medicine, promote and encourage uniformity. I work in health care, and in fact I am a minority, but I hate answering question like that. My kind of essay is an essay like Case's. They pretty much let you write whatever you want, isn't that the best way to get to know someone. And sorry if this seems like I'm trying to argue with you exmike. I didn't want it to come off that way😛

to those of you who have recieved the secondary already, could you please let me know the LOR requirements for students without a committee....how many letters, any specific faculties, etc.

Thanks again for your help.

Jeff

Jeff--

They require 3 letters from faculty, with at least 2 of them being from science faculty.

thanks a lot munchkin57...i really apprecaite it

I'm going to be a first year at MCO this fall and we had the same secondary essay question last year.

It was actually pretty easy to write, because I just discussed my experiences working in health care....specifically with people of different ethnicity, backgrounds, and religious beliefs.

good luck!

Looks like I'll be at MCO this fall as well. For that question, I talked about my experience working with doctors in Mexico.

I received the MCO secondary last week and am wondering if I should explain that I didn't really take any science pre-req's until after my freshman year due to a change in my major. Any advice?

Ok, stupid question.

Does the "life experience" of the third question have to be health related? Or can it really be any experience?

They define cultural competence by relating it to the health field, which seems to indicate they want a clinical experience, but life experience seems to indicate it can be from anything in your life.

Thanks
