Hi , I wanted to start this poll to see at what age people are applying to medical schools.

Please share your age if you are in process of applying to USA medical schools or at the time when you plan to apply

Note: This is a private poll

Thank you!

At the time of application or matriculation?

I was 23 for half of the cycle and 24 for the other half. What do you want me to put? 23 when I started applying 24 about halfway through the cycle.

hmmm..i guess its the time you apply. i'm putting down 22.

i'm turning 23 in the middle of the application cycle... but i put down 22

I'll be 24 when I apply... maybe even 25.

having a real job/being a real person scares me, so I'm trying to put it off for as long as possible.

I'll be 22 when I start the cycle and will turn 23 in september 2010 (interview time?)..so I guess I'll be 23 once classes start and will quickly be 24. wow, i'll be old. haha, j/k!

Was it really necessary to count by ones all the way to 45? A few grouped bins after the late 20s would make this a lot more visually useful.

Exactly what I was thinking

Individual counts make it more accurate for statistical analysis!

I haven't applied yet, but I'll be 19 in June when I apply, 20 during interview season, and 21 at matriculation (hopefully, depending on when school starts). Basically, I'm a badass.

how is this possible?
did you start college early?
or maybe cram a hell-load of classes into a few quarters/summers?

I went to kindergarten a year early, then saw a psychologist and she said I should skip second grade, I did. So, ultimately, yes I started college early by graduating when I was 16. But, psh, not like it's going to make any difference in the long run. It's not like I can write that on my application anywhere, unless maybe the personal statement, but it would be really difficult to incorporate it in.

applied at 21, matriculating at 22! its still surreal! 😀

Thank you!

I was 22 the first time, and 23 the time I got in.

Great name, BTW.

No point to this thread, you're all going to be young doctors really.

Yep, ratio vs interval

Actually, if I recall correctly, you need at least 5 counts for every category in a poll like this so using these individual counts make it a completely un-usable for statistical analysis.

I may be mixing this up with some other statistics test but either way I do remember that having so many bins with 0 hurts the statistical analysis.

And it's simply plain annoying to look at.

You can eliminate the outliers later, but it's nice to measure them and have that option... It's ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS better to have individual counts if possible. ALWAYS. Because you can take individual counts and group them later. However, you can't take groups and individualize them later.

God, I am so upset because this is so biased, rude, and unfair. My age demographic isn't even represented on here and I am totally like WTF?!?!?!

Well anyway, I just came here after rockin it out at the most awsome concert of the century -- Miley Cyrus . . . YOU are G+D! -- and I was like dood, let me check out sdn b-cuz I haven't been there in a while. I checked out this thread and was all ZOMG, they don't even have my age range or that of my friends.

Like, I was totally confused first off because I was like eleventeen for the most part of the application but then I turned like twelveteen sometime in the end of it and so I'm not elventeen anymore. I am old enough to like totally have wet day dreams about miley now so I know I am getting mature and all. So doods, WTF?!?!?!?!

IS BAD VIRUS GONNA HAVE TO CHOKE A BITCH?!?!?!?! (Dave you rock).

Why is my demographic not repped here doods? Someone is going to have to call doogie in here and show him this thread cuz he's gonna be pissed and i don't want to lose a left or right nut.

Fair enough.

right! 👍

As the old cougar on this site (matriculating 27 yr old)😛, I would say having a real job is not so scary! Well maybe it is with the current economy. But, I was able to spend much of my twenties having fun, going out with the girlfirends, traveling the world, and taking up multiple hobbies all because I had the time and money (and an awesome job).

During my senior year of college I had major senioritis and burnout. So I couldn't imagine going directly into med school after that, but kudos to those who have the drive to go directly after college. But for those who are considering taking a year or more off, it's a great opportunity for getting some real world experience, learning things outside the classroom, traveling, having family/friends/"me" time, and enjoying your twenties & youth w/o the stress of school.

I'll be 22 when I start applying and 23 when I matriculate, as my birthday is in May.

The AAMC conducted a similar poll. Except that it was of all applicants for the last seven years. So the N value blows this one out of the water:

AAMC Age Data

Of course, the downside is that all you have is the results. Spoiler Alert, we tend to be in our early to mid twenties.

age of 19 is less than 1 percentile (meaning more than 99 precentile thinking of as MCAT scores...)

I guess this thread isn't about how old we feel - haha I might be feeling 50 by the time this application cycle is over.

This thread makes me feel old...

I feel like Wooderson in Dazed and Confused...

Don't click if you're sensitive to couple PG-13 explicatives...
