Hi you guys,
I've searched, but haven't found a thread that covers this.
Can people post the grading systems for med schools? From a few med students I've talked to at UCLA, some have ultimately decided upon the school because they are P/F. (I don't know if it's Honors, too.)
This is a little early to worry about this for me, if I need to worry about it at all, since I'm AMCAS2003, but I think it would be nice to know.
So, to start the list:

UCLA P/F

Thanks! :D

Thank you guys for all of your help!

Hate to say this, but UCLA is not a real P/NP, as the people will find out who go there soon enough (a month into classes). Some of there classes have optional grades, and they are never really optional. I'll put a * next to them.

And for USC, it's not a secret ranking. The top ten % gets an award based only on two tests at the end of the year. Whatcha got his info from a second year who are under a different system then 1st years and future classes.
Adding a few schools:

Baylor High Honors/Honors/High Pass/Pass/Fail
Case Western P/F
Columbia Now P/F
Emory A,B,C,F

USC P/F (graded on 2 year end tests)
UCD P/F
UCLA P/F (there are rankings)
UCI H/P/F
U Florida Grades
U Miami grades...i think
Vanderbild grades
Wayne State H/P/F

Adding Howard with Honors, Pass, Fail

Baylor High Honors/Honors/High Pass/Pass/Fail

Jalbrekt,

CWRU is P/F for the first two "non-clinical" years, but the 3rd and 4th year clerkships are graded (honors commendable pass fail).

For anybody who has posted the other schools' grading systems posted, are you aware of any grading distinctions between the first two years and last two years?

Cheers
-a.

hopkins just changed their grading to honors/high pass/pass/low pass/no pass or something to that extent (basically grades). it is in their constitution that their students will be graded. stanford is P/F for all 4 years without ranking. some of the UCs are H/P/F for the clinical years. harvard is P/F and then H/P/F for the clinical years.

•••quote:•••Originally posted by bonecutter:
•Someone posted that Columbia is p/f. Only half true. The first year is p/f and maybe the second will be soon but the 3rd and 4th years are h/p/f (thank our lucky stars!)

Bonecutter•••••ok surprise surprise....why is that what Jalbrekt and bonecutter said arent a surprise

it seems like we will be RANKED no matter what!!!

ok pple

then u all know from now...even if u go pass/no pass, U ARE STILL RANKED!!!

so that basically means grades for another 4 years....yuk!!!

i always thought it was odd to not be on an A-F scale, but instead to be high honors/honors/pass/fail...
there are so many classifications, is there really any difference?

•••quote:•••Originally posted by pocwana:
•i always thought it was odd to not be on an A-F scale, but instead to be high honors/honors/pass/fail...
there are so many classifications, is there really any difference?•••••My theroy would be because many students will be happy with pass or honors whereas medical students are not used to getting C's. For an A-F system to meaningful many students would have to get C's and they wouldn't like that whereas people can deal with a pass (P=MD).

The pass/fail grading system has the advantages of fostering a less competitive academic environment while trying to foster collaborative learning. However, all schools that i know of have a class rank still, and track your progress throughout the years. AOA still exists at schools with P/F, and they are able to do so because of this internalized class ranking. In addition, the letter from the dean sent to your residency programs will undoubtably reveal to the committee how well you performed. Also, residency directors will put more reliance on the USMLE step I in evaluating you.

Yet i believe that P/F DOES make the environment less competitive, and puts less stress on medical students. Rather than trying to beat your peers, you simply need to learn as much as you can, and try to stomp the boards.

Personally, i found the p/f vs letter grade, a very important factor in deciding which medical school to attend. i don't want to be stressed out every couple weeks trying to honor a class because i want to do a competitive match. rather, i can focus on learning as much as i can, working with my classmates and channel my competitive spirit into killing the boards, and not my classmates.

LONG LIVE P/F!!!

Tulane is H/HP/P/C/F ... for many, many years. And 70% is the pass line. So, someone correct that.

You will be evaluated. Take away honors and you still must somehow be differentiated from the rest of the pack. If there were no way to differentiate you from other students from your school and from other schools it will severely limit your appeal to residency directors. They are looking for proven performers. Take away honors and you take away one opportunity to prove your capabilities. Also, in support of p/f, someone said:
•••quote:••• i can focus on learning as much as i can, working with my classmates and channel my competitive spirit into killing the boards, and not my classmates.
••••While this may be true for this individual, in general when there is no incentive to excel, the group will drop to the lowest common denominator and do just enough to pass, which has frightening implications for performance on boards etc.

One final thing, I just recently sat down for my dean's interview preparatory to entering next years match, and while I did not honor every course, I was very glad to see the ones I had coloring my transcript.

Bonecutter

thanks to all for the truth behind the p/f

Not sure if I am doing this right. Add Mayo with P/F for first year (this year is the first year). I believe they are still toying with the idea of extending P/F to second year. If I am right, I believe 3-4th years are graded.

this list is real helpful but i didnt see one of my schools maybe just missed it. oh well.

What about which schools grade on curves?

I've heard that this is more important than the grading system, because the average score for med school tests tends to be somewhat low. Schools which don't curve tend to have a higher % of dropouts (ie Jefferson).
