So im in a sticky spot. i just transferred to a university this semester from cc. my gpa is 2.8 🙁 and i JUST NOW decided what i wanted to do with my life.. hopefully med school. im a vet tech right now and my first thought was possible vet school, but my decision was pretty iffy. i took chem I and bio I at cc got an A and a B BUT they were for non-science majors so i was pretty mad when i found that i have to retake them for the science majors. any chance of having enough time to raise my GPA high enough?? im a soph. just now (actually today) starting my 4th semester. thoughts??? honestly...

-thanks

yeah you definitely have a few semester left to raise that GPA from a 2.8..very lucky that you are still a sophomore because there is time left. Just get in some volunteer, clinical experience, ACE (few Bs) and you will be fine. Schools like to see an upward trend...good luck with the process

I was in exact same boat (2.8 entering my 4th sem), and now entering my 6th sem I have a 3.5 (loaded up on units and took summer classes).

Good luck.

Ok cool thanks guys! any more thoughts I would appreciate. Def planning on taking summer courses. I wanted to be an ER scribe but im pretty sure they want you to have org. chem 1st. as far as EC's ?? volunteering at a hospital, there is also a national health club (forgot the exact name) that i plan on joining. i need some ideas. the thought of going to med school is still pretty new. i try and read on these a lot to get more ideas on what i need to do.

any help is surely appreciated! 🙂

^ So did you just take extra classes? more than you needed besides your pre reqs to have a better chance to get more good grades added on your gpa?

obviously you need to raise that gpa as high as possible. Take some science electives to make sure your science gpa is high. For ECs do things you enjoy. Try to shadow some physicians, volunteer in a hospital or clinic & get exposed to the medical field. There are a lot of neat medically related things you can do. Take a peep at some MDApps to get an idea of what other people do.

going back to my gpa... so its a 2.8 right now, on my 3rd day of my 4th semester... do i need an A in every class to get my gpa to a reasonable level for med school? i need to know what im in for. and how about summer classes at community college? good idea? bad idea??

i need to take summer classes for sure but knowing where or if it matters would be good info for me.

-thanks again for any replies!

How many credits do you have? How many credits do you have remaining?

I started out with a sub 3.0 gpa my 1st semester and getting practically straight As with a few Bs here and there for the next 3.5 years i was able to raise my GPA up to 3.6. It's definitely doable if you set yourself up right.

i have 36 hours done- i think i need 84 more? if that sounds about right because i still have about 2.5 years to go for my undergrad. do have an opinion on summer classes at community college?? its a pretty far drive to my university, so it would be easier to go to cc for the summer... BUT if you are thinking not such a good idea.... ?

Taking summer classes at a local CC is fine, but don't take the prerequisites there, as you need the more rigorous version a four-year school will provide to be better prepared to take the MCAT.

thanks for all the replies- im wanting to get certified/license EMT and work as one, also do volunteer work at a local hospital, work as an ER scribe when i can, and ask about shadowing either at a hospital or clinic. Also join the Alpha Epsilon Delta: National pre-health professions honor society and/or the HOSA (Health ocupations students of america). What other EC's would i need. i know i need something for leadership but im pretty clueless on what i could do for that.

any ideas?? those sound ok??

The short answer is yes, you do need A's from here on out. You can get up to a 3.4 or so by the end of your junior year if you do so. If you wait until after your senior year to apply - which you should - you could get up to a 3.6.
