I am a 2nd year biomedical engineering student at the Georgia Institute of Technology. I was originally planning to go to grad school but have recently begun to think seriously about med school and specifically radiology. I've heard many things about how difficult it is even getting into med school much less making it through. I am looking for advice/wisdom. My goal for med school is Duke, though i'm not sure what my chances are or getting in. My other choices would be Emory and the Medical College of Georgia. What kind of community thing should I focus on? I was thinking a summer of research and a summer of volunteer work. I'm pretty sure that I want to be a doctor; and I do like science and I think I could handle the academic part of it. What i am worried about is the more squeamish stuff. Do you get used to things like cutting people open and etc.? I have a feeling i'll be the guy puking into the trash can while cutting open cadavers. All in all there isn't much doubt as to whether I want to do this, but rather if I could... Thanks for the help

My sitster couldn't stand the sight of blood, after med school and residency it's no big deal to her anymore. After a few weeks in anatomy lab you'll get desensitized to it all.

Not only is Medical School hard to get into, Radiology is a VERY hard specialty to get into, from what I've heard/read.

doh... thanks for the info. Any advice on getting in?

Duke is insanely hard to get into.

If you want to go to medical school, the first thing that you have to realize is that you are only setting yourself up for dissapointment if you have your heart set on one or two schools.

Fact is: you have to get in first, and these schools (even the less competitive ones) accept less than 10% of their applicants.

So identify 20-30 places you would like to go to, and take it from there.

Graduate in the top 5% of your class and make a 33-34 MCAT and you should have a relatively good chance of acceptance from Duke. Anything less, and I would not get my hopes up.

Med School admissions are VERY tough and unpredictable. I'd also hoped to go to Duke (4.0, 37R MCAT), but didn't make the cut. But I am one very happy VIrginia Cavalier Med 1 this fall... It's good to apply to a range of schools and aim high, but be happy to get in wherever you are accepted!

Wow thats tuff.

plenty of ppl in radiology with a PhD. You don't do quite the same stuff as a diagnostic radiologist, but you still visit patients, do research, etc.
