med school rankings based on???

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
US News and World report is based on those who enter primary care residencies and the amount of research dollars. Many say that these rankings are skewed and I totally agree with them....why? because i think it that research dollars doesnt show the strength of a medical school program. % of students entering primary care isnt indicative of strength either because primary care is only one residency out of the 20 (although it may be the most popular or the most needed now-a-days). There were a couple of research articles about this that i read, but i cant remember what they were or where the links are...perhaps someone else has them?

Just curious what they base med school rankings on??? Is it financially driven or is it USMLE scores or...????

US news rankings are not solely based on research dollars and students entering primary care. Each accounts for 30% of the total ranking score within each respective category. Much of the ranking is based on Peer assesment by medical school deans and assesment by residency directors (40%). The rest of the ranking score comes from student selectivity (MCAT scores, undergrad GPA, acceptance rate) and faculty resources (student/teacher ratio). For more detailed info see the wesite:

And students entering a primary care residency is likely also skewed 'cause I'm willing to be most from those research-intensive schools will go on to fellowships from those "primary care" residencies. Especially since IM and Peds are stepping stones to almost the greatest number of fellowships.

This goes under the listing "Why i think US news and report is somewhat worthless in a sense"

Is there any ranking system that is somewhat accurate or indicative of strength...or is it all subjective?

What exactly are you looking for in a medical school? Do you want a great teaching staff, early patient contact, few required lecture hours, high number of students:cadaver ratio? Once you can answer this question, forming your own ranking will be pretty easy.

Fair enough...i know what i'm looking for in a school. I'm guessing talking in general about how the med schools are/should be ranked. not necessarily as to which school i should attend or what not, but just which ones stand above the rest.
